EIGHT MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE
Friday, November 12, 1954
Bedford, RUarshfield Contend Tonight
In State Play-Off; Clear Skies Seen
It will be on to greater heights
possibly the state champion
ship for one team and the end
of the 1954 trail for the other
tonight after two of Oregon's
.prep gridiron powerhouses,
Marshfield high of Coos Bay and
the Medford Black Tornado, end
their combat on the senior high
field here in one of the state's
Class A-l toga quarter-finals.
Which it will be for either
team is expected to depend large
ly on morale. Both clubs are of
proven ability.
One of the largest crowds to
witness a prep( grid encounter
at the Medford stadium is anti
cipated. For, the weatherman
has promised a cool, clear night
and a sellout is foreseen.
Although approximately 250
reserved seats had not been sold
early 'this morning, they-were
expected to be gobbled up by
game time. About 150 ducats
were on sale at the high school
office today. Some were those
which had been held for season
ticket holders are not -good f o:
the scuffle but holders were
given priority through Wednes
day for purchase of their regular
season seats.
On Sale at Gate
Tickets not sold at the school
office today and more than 100
being returned from Coos Bay
are to be available when gates
at the stadium open at 6:45 p.m.
A fairly fast field is likely for
the play-off struggle between
the Tornado's champs of District
6 and the Pirates' victors of Dis
trict 5 as the southwestern Ore
gon mantle as well as a state
semi-finals spot is at stake. A
check of the turf this morning
showed it "a little soft but not
bad." There is good chance that
the field may dry out some more
before game time. The weather
bureau listed the possibility of
widely scattered showers today
but not enough to hurt. Clear
skies will continue a perfect fall
weatherwise for football here.
Marshfield's Golden . Pirates,
unmarred in nine games this sea
son and victors over Medford 28
to 6 two weeks ago, are listed
as "heavy favorites' by at least
WlfiJuetSpolitan prognosticator.
Followers closeto- the- Tornado
gang aren't willing to agree.

nado has a chance, and a good
one, to pull an "upset" on its
home field. The Marshfield set
back was the only one suffered
by Medford in eight games
against Oregon foes this year.
Near Top Shape
The Black Tornado, recogniz
ing it will have to be fired up
to overcome the heavier Marsh
field club, had its last drill yes
terday morning and was pro
nounced in near fop shape physi
cally. Its session lasted from 9:30
a.m .to 12:30 p.m. The squad
worked hard enough to break
a sweat and had a chalk talk.
Dick McLaughlin, quarterback
and linebacker, had a touch of
flu and a sore throat and did not
suit down.
Medford hopes are based large
ly on tighter defense, better
tackling, than it showed in the
other Pirate clash. And there
was indication that the defense
will be improved. The task will
be to prevent the breakaway
running of John Johnson and
to repel the line smacking of
Denny Baker.
Both clubs this evening are
likely to rely mostly on their
running games but Medford with
Ed McCullough and Alton Stone
pitching can take to the air ef
fectively. Kick-off is set for 8 p.m.
Students of Medford and
Marshifeld highs have priority
to the seating in the old grandstand.
