Mysteries of Freighter On
Sea Bottom Near Solution
Copenhagen (U.R) The
200-year-old mysteries of the
armed freighter on the sea bot
tom off the Danish coast of Ska
gen are nearing solution.
The recent finding of a Rus
sian kopeck coin from 1757 in
dicates, occording to experts,
that the ship was of Swedish or
Rusisan origin.
A professional wreck-hunter,
Sigurd Dammgaard, 59, is do
ing a detective's job on board his
ship. Sankt Georg, assisted by
his son, Siguard, 24, and a diver,
Borge Bohus. Beside his investi
gation on behalf of the museums
and historians, he runs his busi
ness, fishing from wrecked ships
along the Danish coast tons of
Iron and other metals for sale.
. Damgaard, known among fish
ermen as "the pirate" because,
they say, he looks like one, is
spending hi3 life exploring
wrecks. He knows them all and
all about them, and he has made
a living out of them for 44 years.
Every day when weather per
mits, he is fishing materials from
the more than 100 wrecks on his
" list. -

The armed freighter now
under investigation was hidden
for 200 years while the sandy
land tongue, belabored by wind
and sea, was moving about 1,500
meters from east to west, thus
passing over the ship which ap
peared on the other side.
The ship is not yet identified,
but its secrets are being wrested
from it, one by one. The kopeck
museum of Copenhagen, with
coin is one of the clues that
might lead to indentification.
The 1757 coin, worth about half
a cent, bears the initials of Em
press Elizabeth of Russia, who
reigned 1741-62. In the earlier
part of her reign she made war
against Sweden, and, as the load
of the wrecked ship mainly con
sists of war materials, experts in
dicate the ship was Swedish or
Russian, probably the latter. It
was, however, no warship; more
likely a transport carrying fort
ress equipment.
The shipment includes, besides
tons of gun ammunition, dozens
of iron-made fire-bombs that
have much in common with fire
bombs used by the British Navy
during the bombardment of Cop
enhagen in 1807.
Damgaard has picked up a gun
marked "anno 1735" and several
other things, all sent to the arms
which he cooperates without
compensation.
This summer he hopes to go
after a big treasure in gold sup
posed to have been on the Brit
ish ship St. George which was
wrecked and sank with 1,700
men on Christmas night, 1812,
off the western coast of Den
mark. More than 10 years ago,
after .having checked with the
British Admiralty, which con
firmed his information, he found
the vessel, half buried in the
sand.
According to a story told by
several survivors a chest contain
ing gold went down with the
ship. Every year Damgaard has
inspected the St. George wreck,
and this summer he will make
an attempt to get into its cabins
to seek the chest.

69 Pianos Shipped To Music Festival

dents attending the Berkshire
Festival,, here this summer, 69
of the massive instruments and
an electronic organ were shipped
750 miles from Cincinnati to the
festival site at Tanglewood.
Two huge trailer trucks with
their heavily padded cargo make
the journey in two and a half
days. Since drivers, by regula
tion, may only be on the road 10
hours a day, the trucks had to
maintain a 30 -mile an hour
average despite occasional traffic
tie-ups, stops for lunches and un
predictable weather. ; -
Loading the pianos took 16
hours . and 300 heavy double
pads, collectively long enough
to cover a tKird of an acre. Ray
mond Schmidt, 38, a piano-moving
expert supervised a series of
complicated maneuvers at the
factory in which the pianos are
wrapped and stacked on trucks
without marring the finish. They
had to be tightly taped against
inevitable jarring during
long trek.
The 1955 models of Ford au
tomobiles will go on display to
morrow. Crater Lake Motor com
pany will be showing them dur
ing the day and will stay open
in the evening to permit others
to view the new cars.
An entirely new line, the Fair
lane series, .will be introduced
with the '55 models, which also
come in three other series. Much
of the styling developed by the
"Thunderbird" personal car ap
pears in the new Fords. All will
retain many, of the characteris
tics which Ford has developed
over the years; but the new cars
have wrap-around windshields,
and new and lower silhouettes.
First Under 5 Feet
The Crown Victoria, a new
model, is the first Ford sedan
under five feet in overall height.
Three new engines are being
offered, a high-compression Y
block V-8; another Y-block V-8,
and an I-block six. Dual exhausts
to provide extra power, are stan
dard, on all Fairlane V-8 and
station wagon models.
, Integrated air conditioning
and heating systems are being
introduced in the , 1955, models.
The system will be installed by
dealers. , j.,
. The. new cars have concave
grills, composed of a plated grid.
Chrome . trimline starts on top
of each front fender at the
headlamp, and follows the curve
of the fender down, then sweeps
backward to the tail : lights.
Hooded headlights- give' the -ef
fect of foiVard thrust, and rear
fenders , form a reverse angle
above larger tail lamps. A flat
ter hood and longer rear deck is
featured. '' --'V
Other new features include
improved Fordomatic transmis
sion; larger brakes; "turbo ac
tion" sparkplugs which burn off
carbon deposits, and others.
Tubeless tires are standard
equipment.

program for members of the lo
cal mental health committee,
leaders of discussion groups and
interested professional people.
In an introduction to the film
and a question-and-answer per
iod following, Dr. L. E. Messen
ger, associate professor of psy
chology at Southern Oregon
college, discussed the emotion
al problems capable of existing
in a classroom, factors that could
multiply them, and methods of
dealing with them by both the
teacher and child guidance clin
ic. . ,
Mrs. Walter Bish, chairman of
the "mental health committee,
conducted a discussion of par
ent study groups active in Jack
son County. How they are
started, how parents could be
urged to join or form new ones,
the aims for parents to meet,
discuss and study mutual prob
lems of child development, and
the relation of the study group
to school PTA's, were items dis
cussed. .
" A list of resource material
used by these study groups was
made, and .included newspaper
clippings, magazine articles, par-1
ticularly the PTA magazine,
study courses made available by
the public - health department,
films, and professional persons
such as teachers, nurses, doc
tors and ministers.
Miss Dorothy Husky, Jackson
county health educator, present
ed sample displays of study
courses and pamphlets on child
development and mental health
that are available. The training
program was concluded with an
nouncement of Retarded Chil
dren's week, which begans Nov.
17, and the film forum to be
held in the county during January.'.-.
