Government Presents Boxing Case
Arguments Before Supreme Court
Washington (U.R) The I claims that Joe Louis, former
government, pressing its monop
oly case against big-time box-
ing interests, was scheduled to
present arguments before the
Supreme Court today that the
sport is subject to the federal anti-trust
laws.
A government suit charging
monopoly, in. boxing was dis
missed by lower, courts, which
referred to the 1953 Supreme
Court ruling that baseball is not
a business in interstate com
merce and therefore not subject
to the federal anti-trust laws.
Named as defendants in the
boxing action are three .corpor
ations the International Box
ing Clubs of New - York and
Chicago and Madison Square
Garden Corp. and two individ
uals James D. Norris and Ar
thur N. .Wirtz. . Norris . and
Wirtz, together with the Gar
den, own 80 per cent of the
stock in the two IBC clubs.
TV Charge Made
; The government charges that
these three corporations and
two individuals monopolize the
promotion and exhibition of
championship boxing bouts, as
well as the ! broadcasting and
televising rights. - .

ing to resign his title in order
to obtain exclusive rights to the
services of the four leading con
tenders at the time and assign
these rights to the defendants,

anti-trust laws, intended' to ex
empt all organized sports from
them and that the government
is now attempting to bring all
sports, including baseball, under
the law "without the possible
embarrassment of a frontal at
tack upon the national pastime
of baseball ..." :
Bighorn Sheep
At Native Range
Lakeview, Ore. -U.F9 Rim
rock bighorn sheep, which were
exterminated by hunters in Ore
gon in about 1916, have been re
turned to the native range in the
Hart mountains east of here.
Some 20 sheep were transport
ed by truck from the interior of
British. Columbia Monday and re
leased into a 35-acre holding pen
on the abrupt west face of Hart
mountain. : .
Bob Mace,, big game specialist
for the Oregon game commission,
said the sheep were trapped
near Williams Lake in British
Columbia. The British Columbia
Game Department and the Ore
gon game commission cooperated
in trapping and transporting the
animals.
The one adult ram, 12 ewes
and seven lambs showed no ap
parent - distress from the 36
hour trip. The game commission
plans to stock other parts of the
bighorn ancestral range from the
small herd. ' ,-.

In passing, Purdue took over
first place this week as former
leader Oregon ran into UCLA

Purdue has gained 187.9 yards

California, however, is out in
front in completions, with 117,
and accuracy, with 62.9 per cent
completed. If Paul Larson, the
country's No. 1 passer, can keep
that completion percentage up

over the lead in bis specialty
again from his teammate, the in
jured Hugh McElhenny, official
league statistics showed today.
' The former Compton Junior
College player gained 570 yards
on 85 attempts during the first
seven weeks of the season for
an average , of 6.7 yards per
carry, Paul "(Tank) Younger of
Los Angeles, who was third last
week, moved into the runnerup
spot with 523 yards on 87 trys
for' an even-six yard average.
McElhenny, despite his idleness,
last week; was third with 615
yards on 64 tries for an eight
yard average. ' '
. Norm Van Brocklin, who hit
on 16 out of 18 attempts during
the weekend, led the passers
with one of the highest average
gain in yards in years. He has
an average of 10.99 yards on 163
attempts for. 94 completions,
1,791 yards and -nine touch
downs. 1
