Hospital; Fund Grows
" Miss Jean Thompson: 22-vear-
old English girl who has been
critically ill, was dismissed from
Ashland General hospital Mon
day afternoon and now is at the
home of her sister, Mrs. Harold
Koss on Hartley lane.
The "Friendship fund,? creat
ed to assist in the payment of
her nursing and hospital care, is
nearing the $500 mark. The most
recent large amount to be con
tributed was $75 given by the
i Church of the Nazarene congre
gation m Ashland. One contribu
tion came from , as far away as
La Grande, Ore., and others
throughout this valley have contributed.
The Ashland Daily Tidings of
fice is receiving the gifts, which
are being deposited in the Ash
land First National bank. Gerald
Wenner and Graham Dean are
trustees for the fund. It is esti
mated that about $1,100 will be
needed to defray the two items.

Mass Blood Typing
Held at Portland i
Portland U.R) A mass blood-
typing operation was launched
at the Portland air base last
night and was believed to be the
first such typing program in the
United States: It was conducted
for civil 'defense agencies.
More than-. 250 -"Oregon ' Na
tional Guardsmen lined up at
tables to have their blood sam
pled and typed. Cooperating per
sonnel from Good- Samaritan
hospital volunteered their , time
for the task and completed it in
less than two hours.
Blood samples from each
guardsman was placed, on a
chemically-treated card which,
in times of disaster, would indi
cate within minutes the blood
type and Rh factor of each sub
ject.' t .
The - sample cards became
part of each man's personnel
record and he was also given a
billfold card. '
BODY FOUND
Duluth, Minn. J(U.B A Du-

covered a body, telephoned po
lice when he noticed bis dog
barking and scratching a mound
of dirt in his backyard. Police
finished the job and dug out the
skeletal remains of an old fish.

Reclamation Heed
Portland (U.R) Local and re
gional cooperation is a necessary
part of getting reclamation proj
ects started, the chief of Army
engineers said today, .
Maj. Gen. S. D. Sturgis Jr., in
a speech read . to the National
Reclamation Association conven
tion here, said "we must expect
large scale federal assistance
only where the needs are obvi
ously of urgent national inter
est." He said since hundreds of
projects have not been started
because of limited funds, those
which will be built must have
local and regional cooperation.
Gen. Sturgis was not present.
His speech was read to the con
vention by Brig. Gen. William
E. Potter, Missouri River divi
sion engineer.-
Duke of Windsor
Denies Discussion
Of Allied Plans
London (U.R) The- Duke - of
Windsor has denied he had. ever
discussed Allied war plans with
the intermediary of a Nazi min
ister in 1940.
The Duke arrived from Paris
on one of his visits to the land
where he was once King and
found, front pages of newspapers
giving a great deal of space to
two letters from the late-Count
Julius Von ?ech Burkersroda,
former German minister, to the
Netherlands. . :
Count Zech-Burkersroda, a
spy organizer, said in the first
of his letters to the German
Foreign Ministry that he hada
chance of establishing "certain
lines" to the Duke who was at
the time on the British military
mission : with the French army

In the second letter the count
quoted Windsor : :. as saying a
meeting ; of the Allied -War
Council had ' decided to defend
the French-Belgian frontier, in
the event of a German invasion
of the Lowland countries.
Without Foundation
Windsor issued a statement
saying "The Duke never met or
had any communication with
Count Nech-Burkersroda. The
suggestions affecting the Duke
are completely without founda
tion. "In particular it is absolutely
untrue that the Duke discussed
the alleged Allied war plans as
stated in the second of the let
ters," the statement said.

school band this year will be
held tonight at 8 p.m. in the
school gymnasium, according to
Principal Roy Parr.
It will be the band's first ap
pearance under its new director,
Ralph Carroll.

Snake River Dam
Plans Draw Fire
Boise (U.R)-- A plan by the
Northwest Power Co. to build
dams at the Mountain Sheep and
Pleasant Valley -sites ; on - the
Snake river today drew the fire
of the Tri-State Hells Canyon
Association. '
The organization, . composed
of federal power proponents, de
clared the move on the part of
the private utilities syndicate
was a "vast pincers movement
to seize the last great available
storage sites on the river before
the people wake up." ;
George H. R. Taylor, secretary-
treasurer of the association,, said
granting permits to -Northwest
Ppwer to build the two .dams
would ' "result in nothing more
than inadequate development of
the - potential and high cost
power.
Russian Ability To
Deliver Bomb Told

the ability to deliver the H-
bomb next year, planning as
sumptions of the federal civil
defense administration predict.
This information-was given by
Oregon Civil Defense Director

of department heads.
Sheets said an attack on Port
land, designated a critical target
area, might not include an H
bomb but civil defense officials
"must plan in terms of a large
destruction area and in dispers
