Annual Dinner
Held by Club
One of the largest gatherings
for several years was enjoyed
by members' of the Last" Man's
club at their annual dinner held
last Saturday evening in the
VFW hall. Members of the VFW
auxiliary served the dinner.
The Last Man's club was or
ganized May 27,' 1937, at a din
ner meeting in the basement of
the Medford hotel. Ira Canfield
was elected first president. Mem
bership was placed at 107 with
Mrs. Eve Prentice . elected as
107th honorary member. Mrs.
Prentice and a group of her ac
cordion students have played
each year, for the annual meet
ing,
As far as is known there is no
other club of this kind on the
coast. There is one in Florida
which also has the title of the
Last Man's club.
- New officers installed by Mr.
Canfield Saturday evening were
John T. Holmer, President, Lyle
B. Thurman, vice-president and
Mrs. Prentice, secretary-treasurer.

Wives of members were invit
ed to the dinner Saturday eve
ning and were provided special
service in the adjoining dining
room. Entertainment was- by
Margie Hall, Sandra Buxton and
Mrs. Prentice.

club November 3 for an all-day
work shop. There were 18 mem
bers and three guests present.
Mrs. Ruby Stowall was hostess
assisted by Mrs. Calvin Lusk.
Mrs. Charles Long of Talent
Garden club, who teaches cer
amics, explained to the group
how ceramics are made and
showed examples of her work.
Some time was spent making
dried corsages and arrangements.
A letter from Mrs. John Win-
ton was read thanking the club
for decorating the Grange hall
for the teenage style show held

There will be a gift exchange
at the December meeting, the
cost of the gift not to exceed
Any one with articles for the
rummage sale is asked to leave

Professor
To Talk Here
Karlin M. Capper-Johnson, a
man who has lived and worked
among the people of several Eu
ropean countries and who now
is professor of history and inter
national relations at Lewis and
Clark college, Portland, will
speak in Medford Thursday, No
vember 11, at the YMCA. The
speaker, president of Oregon
United Nations association, will
explain how an average citizen
can support the United Nations,
and will answer questions dur
ing a discussion period. The pub
lic is invited to attend:
Mr. Capper-Johnson's appear
ance here is sponsored by Med
ford Council of -Church Women
and the YMCA, and is set for
7:30 p.m. 1 .
' In past years Mr. Capper
Johnson has visited France,
Italy, Poland, Belgium, Czecho
slovakia and other countries.
More recently he was aKwork
among the farmers and villagers
of the Magyar race now living
in Slovakia north of the Danube,
having been deported as a result
of the post-war tension between
Czechoslovakia and Hungary. In
vited by both governments to
investigate the problem, he sug
gested an arrangement to im
prove their lot which was later
put into effect.
The Communist revolution in
Czechoslovakia found Mr. Capper-Johnson
in Prague, since he
knew many of the democratic
leaders, including the president
of the republic,1 Edvard Benes,
and - the minister of foreign af
fairs, Jan Mazaryk. He was thus
able to behold the Communist
aggression from a special point
of vantage. . V .
Before coming ' back to the
United States, the speaker lec
tured in Denmark, Norway and
Sweden, and has traveled and
lectured widely in America. He
is the .author -of a number of
works on international affairs..
A native of Leeds, England,
Mr. 'Capper-Johnson was educat
ed at Oxford university,7 taking'
a -degree with honors in history.
Latr -he received ' the Davison
scholarship to Harvard, where he
specialized in international rela
tions. He has taught in Birming
ham,. England, r Syracuse and
Rochester -universities, Carleton
college and -now Lewis and
Clark; '. ' ;
