in B, is something new for this
community and are achieve

two teams are in state play-offs,

that Medford's Black Tornado
has a good chance in the state
quarter-final her next Fri
day despite its previous 6 to
28 setback at the hands of the
Golden Pirates. North Bend
outgained Marshfield 320
yards to 153 and had 15 first
downs to th Pirates four.
Medford defense, not up to
par in the last three games, is
certain to get plenty of atten
tion this week in the prepara
tions for th playoff. And
there's confidence that the
Tornado defenders with state
honors at stake will pull to
gether and rise to the occasion
as they did so often earlier in
th season.
BASKETBALL CLOSE
Basketball season is "closer
than you think" and as yet we
have not heard of any action on
the part of the Medford Inde
pendent League to organize for
the coming season. Judging from
past seasons action will have to
be taken soon to get the pro
gram rolling if a full slate is to
be . played. Several weeks and
several meeting generally have
been needed to get the loop in
operation each year. -. ,: I
Last season . 13 teams were
members of the league -which
meant a long full schedule. Com
pany A and Headquarters Com
pany, National Guard units here,
both plan teams this year. The
Guard has been a pillar of the,

Completes Crossing

Atlantic flier, song composer
and father of, 10 children, said
today he worked out several
new tunes he hopes to sell dur
ing his 22-hour solo flight in a
light plane from New York to
Paris.
: His first stop today was at a
music store where he bought
sheet music paper on which to
set down the tunes he made up
on hjs harmonica while winging
across the Atlantic along the
route blazed by Charles A.
Lindbergh.
Sips Champagne
Conrad said he has sold some
of the tunes he composed in ear
lier solo flights. ' -
The flier celebrated his arri
val in Paris by sipping his first
glass of champagne. He said he
once vowed he would never
drink champagne until he du
plicated Lindbergh's Lone Eagle
flight. . - '
Conrad, a tall, lanky veteran
pilot, climbed nonchalantly from
his 300-horsepower Piper Apache
at Toussus-le-Noble airfield here
yesterday afternoon just 22
hours and 21 minutes after leav
ing New York's Idlewild airport.

champagne, Conrad rushed to
the airport administration build
ing and telephone his wife, Sal
ly, in San Francisco.
Conrad . said he intends to
.spend a few days in Paris to see
the city and to attend to business
matters with the Joans Aircraft
Co., to whom he delivered the
Piper plane.

Pro Hoop Lead

-' A pair of impressive week end
victories left the Fort Wayne
Pistons in undisputed possession
of first place in the Western Di
vision of the National Basket
ball association today as the only
unbeaten team in that sector.
The Pistons racked up their
third win of the season, 90-83,
over New York on Saturday and
came back Sunday night to score
a lopsided, 109-84 victory over
the Rochester Royals. . In each
case, it was the losing team's
first loss and Rochester dropped
into second place in the Western
division.
In other Sunday games, Bos
ton nicked, Baltimore, 101-99;
Syracuse downed Milwaukee,
98-80; and New York beat Min
neapolis in overtime, 103-93.

resting at his home today after
a harrowing experience on Mt.
Hood. -:-
The boy, Fred Spencer, be
came lost while ' attempting to
climb the mountain Saturday.
He. was . found ' by searchers
asleep on the brinv of treacher
ous Zigzag - canyon ' Saturday
night. . ,: :' " : .-
He was unharmed when found
by. two of the 18 .searchers. He
was so exhausted by his five
hour ordeal on the sleet-swept
peak that he fell asleep while
drinking a bowl of soup at the
lodge here after his rescue.
Spencer had no. mountain
climbing experience and was
clad only in light clothing when
he set out to climb the 11,000
foot peak. He was at the 9500
foot level when he was found.
