day night, climaxing a sweep of
all its round-robin final round
games. The U.S. team surged off
to a 35-19 half time lead and nev
er was seriously threatened.
The Philippines gained third
place in the tournament by beat
ing Uruguay, 67-63, and China
downed Israel, 51-28, for fifth
place.

"It was a case of meeting a
man who was in shape for the

Slade a chance to get off first

DeMarco concentrated on
right hand counter blows, then
went to work on the midsection
of Jimmy Walker, his sparring
partner. Walker called several
time outs during the rounds.
Joe Louis, former world
heavyweight champion, visited
DeMarco's camp Saturday. He is
slated to predict the outcome of
the Carter-DeMarco battle.

passing Bobby Layne led the
champion "Detroit" Lions to an
easy 27-3 victory over the last
place Baltimore Colts last night
in brisk autumn weather before
a Memorial stadium crowd of
25,287.
The victory gave Detroit a
league record of 7-1 and left the
outclassed Colts- at the bottom
of the conference standings with
a 1-7 record.
The Colts scored first on a
34 yard field goal by defensive
halfback Bert Rechichar. But
Detroit bounced right back to
score on a blocked kick later
in the same period and a field
goal in the second. Layne s
deadly short passes kept the
Colts off balance as the confer
ence leading Lions went on to
roll up a touchdown and a field
goal in the third period and a
touchdown in the fourth.
. The Colts played without the
services of their best running
back, injured Buddy Young, and
as a result their running game
against the hard-charging De
troit line was virtually non
existent.

resentatives of several Washing
ton, Oregon and Idaho cities met
here Saturday to discuss the pos
sibility of organizing a class "B"
baseball league of six or eight
teams to replace the defunct
Western International league.
The class "A" WIL folded up
this summer. The chief reasons
for the league's demise were
low attendance and big payrolls.
WIL members who may form
the nucleus of the new league
are Yakima, Wenatchee, Salem,
Tri-City, and Lewiston, Ida. Also
reported as strong possibilities
for league membership are Eu
gene and Coos Bay, Ore., and
Tacoma and Longview, Wash.
