to visit the schools this, which
has been designated as Ameri
can Education week, according
to E. H. Hedrick, city school
superintendent. :
Parents are welcome at any
time, he said, but special pro
grams . have been arranged for
those wishing to attend.
Seasonal Layoffs
Add 4400 Persons
To Jobseeker List
Salem (U.R) Seasonal lay
offs added 4400 to the lists of
jobseekers during October but
the increase was the smallest
for tbis time of year since the
end of World War II, with the
'exception of 1951, according to
the State Unemployment Com
pensation Commission.
Local offices estimated 30,400
persons were unemployed, com-
. pared with 26,000 a month ago
and 27,300 on Nov. 1, 1953.
Major Share in Portland - .
Although most of the layoffs
In canneries, construction and
other seasonal pursuits were re
ported from downstate, the ma
or share of Oregon's unemploy
ment continued to come from the
Portland metropolitan area.
Three offices in Portland, Ore
gon City and Hillsboro counted
15,700 persons actively looking
for jobs, compared with 11,700
a year ago. Salem, Ontario, La
Grande, Klamath Falls, Baker
and Astoria also noted increases
over last fall. ;
Claims for compensation also
were higher than last month or
last year but the increases were
the smallest of the entire year.
During the last week of October.
19, some 180 claimants were re
ported, compared to 18,182 a
year ago.
Payments Down Slightly
Payments to eligible workers
were $1,068,935, slightly under
the September total but 13 per
cent above a year ago. For the
first 10 months of 1954 payments
totaled $20,406,950, just under
the record st for the entire year
of 1950.
Since the beginning of the
benefit year last July 1, claim
ants have passed the 50,000 mark
but payments have been made
to only 28,659. Of these, 821
have exhausted their : benefit
rights for the 1954-55 benefit
year. .
The.week is sponsored by the
National Education association,
the American 'Legion, the U. S.
Office of Education, and the Na
tional Congress of Parents and
Teachers.' This week is the 34th
annual observance of the event.
Central theme this year is "Good
Schools Are Your Responsibil
ity." - . ; .
- On Monday at. 7 p. m., parents
are incited to visit the Junior
high school, register and receive
the classroom schedules used by
their children, and follow it .for
brief class sessions during which
they will be able to see and hear,
in a general way, the 'routine
followed by the students.
' The high school will have a
similar - "Back to School" pro.
gram for parents at 7:30 p. m.
Wednesday.
At Jackson school, parents are
invited to visit on Wednesday at
any time, and at 1:40 p. m.
there will be a special program
presented on the theme "A Good
American," which also will sa
lute war veterans, tied in with
the observance of Veterans day
the next day. .
Three Other Schools r
At the other three grade
schools, designated visiting per
iods will be in the evening, al
though parents will be welcome
at any time. Students' work will
be on their desks, the ropms will
be open and teachers will be in
attendance. Refreshments will
be served in the schools' cafe
terias. Hours will be, for Lin
coln school, 7:30 p. m. Wednes
day; Roosevelt school, 7 p. m.
Tuesday, and Washington school,
7 p. m. Tuesday.
Invitations and schedules have
been sent to all the parents of
students in school district .vNo
