Note Grace Kelly referred to
as the "rarest commodity in
Hollywood, a beauty who can
act." The Grace Kelly hysteria
now borders on the ridiculous.
And may soon be over the bor
der. There are many beauties in
Hollywood who can act. And, in
fact, act rings around Miss
Kelly. As for examples, Barbara
Stanwyck and Greer Garson.
Also Vanessa Brown. And how
about Yvonne De Carlo?
Passing By
Caesare Cardinl. Celebrated
Pacific Coast restaurateur. The
Originator of Caesare's salad.
He originated' that delightful
salad when he operated an Ital
ian restaurant in Tiajuana, Mex
ico. Now has a place in Los
Angeles . . . Newly betrothed
George Jean Nathan. Dean of
drama critics. He has lived
forty-four years m the same
apartment. If that isn't a record
of lengthy loyalty to one apart
ment, what is?
Window Shopping
In a tobacco shop's window
display I was interested in not
ing among the cigarets a brand
called "Picayune Cigarettes
the Pride of New Orleans." And
another brand called "Jezebel
Cigarettes." Also one called
"Rum Maple." The most remark
able display of cigarets I ever
saw was in a tobacco shop in
Geneva, Switzerland. On display
there were over 450 different
brands of cigarets!
Horses and Women
Lana Turner is frequently re
ferred to as "the original
sweater girl." Also those things
called "falsies are often spoken
of as if they were something
new in feminine attire. Both
were in fashion when your
great-grandmather was a whistle
girl. What follows is an excerpt
from an account of what were
the feminine fashions in Man
hattan, over sixty years ago, in
the "elegant eighties," by the
distinguished New York City
historian. Henry Collins Brown:
"The jersey (sweater) rendered
a buxom figure not hard to look
at. It undoubtedly did justice to
all the curves of beauteous wom
anhood. When worn by a boyish
figure, it was quite permissible
to add various devices that sup
plied some deficiencies nature
had omitted to provide."

Is the origin of the nickname of
"Casey" Stengel, manager of the
New York Yankees? A. Stengel
is from Kansas City, Mo. The
nickname was originally "K. C."
Steneel and it developed into
"Casey." Q. What State had the

genius who originated this tax?
Shouldn't he have a monument
somewhere in his old home
town or at a prominent spot on
U.S. Highway No. 1? A. The gas
oline tax originated in Oregon

Tempus Fugit
To give you an idea how right
that man was who first said
"tempus fugit," it was sixteen
years ago that Wendy Hiller ap
peared in the film version of
Shaw's "Pygmalion." Wendy is
my favorite "Pygmalion" star of
screen or stage. Incidentally,
Shaw personally selected her to
star in "Pygmalion." What hap
pened to that Theater Guild idea
of making a musical version of
"Pygmalion"? That could be
very good.
Barbers
Ever have your hair cut with
a razor? Have heard it said that
continental barbers prefer to use
a razor for a hair cut. While the
British use scissors. Neither uses
the clippers. I have had haircuts
in a number of European coun
tries and none of the barbers
used a razor. They seemed to
prefer scissors but would use
clippers if you asked them to.
Best haircuts I had in Europe
were in Italy, especially in
Venice.

Dec. 4, conducted tour of a local
sawmill; Dec. 8, a different mill
tour to inspect other equipment;
Dec. 15, cooperate with Medford
Lions club on a Christmas gift
package to a needy family.
Jan. 5, business meeting at
Roosevelt school, 7 p.m.; Jan. 16,
snow party for explorers and
their dates; Jan. 26, progressive
party; Feb. 2, business meeting,
Roosevelt school, 7 p.m.; Feb. 9,
commemoration of Scout week,
Feb. 6-12, and Feb. 19-20, over
night hike set in preparation for
Lake O' Woods called "Opera
tion Icicle."
Advisors pointed out that all
boys over 14 years, whether
they have been Boy Scouts or
not, are invited to join the

sales tax as a school revenue
source as they opened their ses
sions at South Salerri high school.
Gov. Paul L. Patterson ad
dressed the group on "what we
expect of your schools."
Legislative proposals being
considered today include a pro
vision that all school boards in
Oregon comprise at least five
members; a proposal that no new
school service should be provid
ed without uniform periods for
legal notices.
The convention concluded Saturday.

cil at Central Point will meet
with a Medford architect in the
near future to discuss plans for
the new fire hall and library
building.
At a meeting Thursday, the
council canvassed city ballots
in Tuesday's election and the of
ficial count showed the fire hall
measure passed , by 369 to 149,
higher than the first unofficial
count. Voting for city candidates
remained the same.
Councilman Robert Padgelt
reported that the city plans to
build a "substantial, fire-proof
structure that will last the city
many years." A bond issue of
Washington U.R) The
Navy Saturday offered to turn
two proud veterans of the Spanish-American
war, the warships
Olympia and Oregon, into pub
lic memorials.
But unless some civic-minded
group offers to take them, the
historic ships may be sold or
scrapped. ;
Congress authorized donation
of the vessels to a state, terri
tory, city or non-profit group
earlier this year. The Navy,
however, noted that the ships
are now in a "deteriorated state"

No Cost lo U.S.
One provision of the transfer
is that the historic ships will
be maintained in "satisfactory
condition at no expense to the
government."
The estimated cost to put the
Olympia in a "safe and present
able condition" is $650,000. The
Navy said no estimate is avail
able on how much it would cost
to repair the Oregon, which is
stripped to her superstructure
and has only hull and deck in
tact. Dewey's Flagship
The Olympia was Adm. Dew
ey's flagship in the Battle of
Manila Bay on May 1, 1898 and
led the attack on the Spanish
squadron. Her final assignment
was to bring home the body of
the unknown soldier of World
War I for burial in 1921,
The Olympia was decommis
sioned in 1922 and is now at the
Philadelphia Naval shipyard in
such poor condition that the
public is not allowed to go
aboard her.

Quits Yanking
Now they're joined by Dr.
William Treutle, a Tacoma,
Wash,, dentist whose experience
with film had been limited to
x-rays of his patients' bicuspids.
In 1951 he suffered a heart at
tack and was told he would die
in six months unless he quit
work. The doctor, wasted -.to
103 pounds, gave away his sav
ings and possessions, including
a 1,000-acre ranch near Carmel,
Calif., and prepared for one last
fling.
"I wanted to go to Africa a
boyhood dream," smiled the
slender bespectacled dentist. "
thought I'd make a film there.
"I'd never even taken home
movies before. I bought a camera
in a drugstore. In Hollywood I
talked to pros, but they laughed.
They said it couldn't be done."
Finds Lot
Treutle sought out famed
movie cameraman James Wong
Howe, whom he met once skiing
in Washington. Howe gave
Treutle some simple instructions
and the dentist hopped aboard a
freighter for Africa. '
At an airport there he met a
former assistant to director C.
B. DeMille, Eleanore Claff, who
was scouting film locations for
another company. They fell in
love and married, with the bride
convinced he could win back his
health.
The honeymooners journeyed
to the country of the Karamoja
tribe, which they claim hasn't
been filmed before. Nine months
later they returned to the United
States with 10,000 feet of excit
ing film featuring nude natives
and gory sacrificial scenes.
Fills for Cash
Unable to sell the unedited
film, Treutle, his health re
covered, went back to filling
teeth at Sebastopol, Calif., to
raise money to finish the picture
him?elf.
"Two years" savings went into
editing, the narration and
muiic,'' he said.
Hallmark productions agreed
to release "Karamoja"' and the
world premiere was held at
SebastopoL The picture has done
such healthy business that Tre
utle gave up dentistry to live
quietly near San Diego. Next !
year he plans to make a similar
movie in South America. 1
