Among the dramas, the best
show on Broadway is "The Caine
Mutiny Court Martial." Of the
musicals my choice is "Can-
Can" which features that lively
Pansienne named Lilo, who is
the top French entertainment
importation since Anna Held. In
fact, Lilo seems to combine all
the best features of Anna Held,
Gaby Deslys, Irene Bordoni and
Mistinguette. I saw my first play
when around five. Offhand, I
can't remember whether is was
"Jack in the Beanstalk" or "Oli
ver Twist." Anyway, I have been
a regular theatergoer ever since.
In all that time I cannot recall
seeing a greater performance
than Lloyd Nolan gives as Capt.
Queeg in "The Caine Mutiny
Court Martial." I will discuss
this in a later issue, it certainly
rates a special paragraph.
Speed Limit
In what state can you drive
an automobile at the highest
speed and still be within the
law? Two states are ,tied in this
respect. Wisconsin and Okla
homa both have a highway speed
of 65 miles an hour. Massachu
setts has the most conservative
highway speed limit of all. You
really have to watch your speed
ometer when motoring in the old
Bay State. There the limit is 40
miles an hour. What is a "rea
sonable" rate of speed to travel
by motor car on a highway? In
eight states no specific speed
limit is mentioned. The motorist
is permitted by law to travel at
a "reasonable" rate of speed.
These states are Alabama, Ari
zona, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas,
Michigan, Nevada and Tennessee.
In conclusion, let me say I have
made the transcontinental round
trip by auto twelve times and
have yet to get a traffic ticket
of any kind on such a journey.
Speedy Delivery
An airmail special delivery
letter posted in Chicago at eight
at night was delivered in Sacra
mento, Calif., at one p.m. the
next day. So a pleased subscriber
informs me. That is almost as fast
as to delivery as a night letter
type telegram. Then consider the
difference in cost. Also even
more important, the lack of limit
on the number of words used.
Bank Names
What bank in this country has
the most interesting name? How
about the Boston Five Cents Sav
ings Bank? That is the largest
savings bank in New England.
It is 101 years old. Just how it
acquired its name I cannot say.
Could it be that it once accepted
deposits of a nickel, a half a
dime, or five cents. I must check
on this.
Important Dales
What are the important dates
in November besides election
day, Armstice Day, and Thanks
giving? Are you aware of the
fact that November 9 this year
will be the sixty-sixth anniver
sary of Steve Brodie's alleged
jump from the Brooklyn bridge?
Have you a bachelorette in your
family? Has she reached the age
of 25? Then I regret to say she
must be classed as "a spinster."
Has she given a thought to the
fact that November 25 is St.
Catherine's Day? St. Catherine
is the patron Saint of Spinsters.
The most celebrated of all
"maidens' prayers" is the prayer
of St. Catherine.

Know anybody named Mac
Leod? Tell them they have a
standing invitation to spend a
weekend at a castle in the High
lands of Scotland. That is, at the
home of the chief of the clan
MacLeod who is Flora MacLeod
of MacLeod. Only person I know
named MacLeod, is that statues
que beauty . from California,
Janet MacLeod and I haven't
seen her lately.

McCarthy Fires
Blast at Senate
Censure Committee
Washington (U.R) Sen
Joseph R. McCarthy kept up his
running battle with the Army
over the Peress case today and
fired a new blast at the special
Senate committee that recom
mended his censure.
McCarthy demanded that
Army Secretary Robert T,
Stevens identify the "secret mas
ter ... in the Pentagon" who
promoted and honorably dis
charged former Maj. Irving Pe
ress, a New York dentist describ
ed by McCarthy as a "fifth
amendment Communist.
Termed 'Lynch Party
Simultaneously, he termed the
special Senate session which
opens Monday on the censure
issue a "lynch party and de
manded that Censure Committee
Chairman Arthur V. Watkins
(R-Utah) explain an "imbecilic
ruling" before debate begins.
McCarthy complained that
Watkins ruled during the cen
sure hearings that McCarthy
could not show that a 1951 sub
committee that investigated him
subpoenaed a witness who was
"mentally incompetent.
Watkins ruled at the time
that the Censure Committee was
interested only in whether the
prior investigation was duly
authorized. He said whether or
not the man McCarthy named
was insane had nothing to do
with it.
'Grossly Dishonest'
McCarthy said that for the
elections subcommittee to try to
call a witness who was "mental
ly incompetent" was "grossly
dishonest" and the" people should
be told about it. '
He said Watkins ruled in ef
fect that he could not criticize
the committee for this.
- "Perhaps you might want to
explain this imbecilic ruling be
fore the debate commences,"
McCarthy wrote to Watkins.

Dreads Meeting In-Laws
When the past cannot be un
done, the best thing to do is to
forget it. A young woman writes:
(Q) "Nearly three yean ago
I met and fell in love "with a
very fine young man. I have
always looked down on girls
who got married because they
had to. Well, this happened to
me, and lo this day I hardly
believe it. My mother-in-law
and father-in-law were out of
town at the time of my mar
riage, and I have never met
them. They have been gone .

the baby. Your sister-in-law has
already accepted you. The
chances are that your parents-in-law
will do the same.

Red Cross Board
Hears Blood Report
Mrs. J. W. Burba, chairman
of the Red Cross blood program,
yesterday reported on the failure
of the last blood collection pro
gram during the monthly meet
ing of the Red Cross board of
directors at the Medford hotel.
The quota of blood needed was
not filled, she said, and added
that plans are being made to
seek to increase the number of
donors. "
Leroy Williams, Medford fire
man and first aid instructor, re
ported that first aid classes are
now under way in Shady Cove
and Rogue River, and that five
new classes will be started in
Medford within the next two
months.
Mrs. James Shaw, director of
the Junior Red Cross, presented
a short program, a report on
JRC activities at the Silver Falls
training camp. Miss Sandra
Strauss, Eagle Point, and Miss
Barbara Swanson, Central Point,
were the trainees for the Med
ford chapter, and, they related
some of their experinces while
taking the course. It is an at
tempt to assist the JRC to be
come a more efficient organiza
tion. Chairman Eugene Thorndike
presided at the meeting.

Alter another dry spell in the
land of quick-silver careers,
Dunn once again has soared to
the top this time, to the sur
prise of his fans, as a slapstick
comedian in an NBC filmed TV
serial, "It's A Great Life."
Though Dunn has seen the
bottom drop out of his life twice.
Dunn, as we he is not bitter about the ups
aging lovers ; and downs of show business.
Natu.-e of Beast
"It s the nature of the beast,"
reflected the actor, who is losing
a battle with his waistline and
graying hair but still has that
warm smile.
"If you let things affect you
too much, it hits you too hard.
The glory of the past isn't para
mount. You learn to take it with
a grain of salt. When you get up
there, you should impersonalize
yourself, like you're a bowl of
clay.

"I wish I hadn't made such a hit
in the beginning, that I had had

Dunn proved to be the best
off-beat casting of the year when
he became a quite funny sloven
ly uncle with Michael O'Shea in
the TV comedy. He is happy
with the home medium and gets
"a million dollars worth of
laughs" while working.
Outdoor Set
Today he sat in the sun as the
TV company informally filmed
scenes of an outdoor set at Hal
Roach studio. Many a TV serial
is made at this studio, and Dunn
waved a friendly hello as Amos
'N Andy and the cast of "My
Little Margie" sauntered by.
"Everybody is surprised I do
slapstick," said Dunn. "I only
tried it once before, on the stage.
The agency that put together
this TV show called me and here
I am."
Recalls Successes
Dunn happily reminisced
about his early successes with
Shirley Temple, "Stand Up and
Cheer" and "Bright Eyes.'' In
1935 he found himself among
the unemployed and drifted back
to the stage. Ten years later
came "A Tree Grows In Brook
lyn" but his Oscar, he said, didn't
help him get more jobs.
During the past few years he
has lived quietly in his bach
home at Malibu with his wife
