Defense Lawyer Tackles Coroner In Sheppard Case
Cleveland A celebrated crim
inal once Was dubbed "Willie
the Actor," but today Cleve
land's celebrated criminal lawyer
William J. Corrigan, took the
title away from him.
Corrigan is chief defense: at
torney for Dr. Samuel H. Shep
pard, the osteopath who is ac
cused of beating his pregnant
wife to death after a quarrel
over his attentions to "other
women."
The 67-year-old, white-haired
attorney put on his act in start
ing to cross-examine a learned
state witness. The man in the
witness chair was Dr. Lester
Adelson, deputy coroner and
pathologist.
Courtroom Shocked
Adelson yesterday shocked the
courtroom by projecting on a
screen gruesome color slides of
the hacked head of pretty Mari
lyn Sheppard. He had performed
the customary autopsy on the
body. His state's testimony was
precise, clinical and highly-technical
in a medical way.
Today, on cross-eximination,
Corrigan started in to '. deflate
him as an expert.
Corrigan brought out that

Haymes Deportation
Washington OJ.R) The Board
of Immigration Appeals today
upheld a deportation order
against Argentine - bora singer
Dick Haymes.
The board rejected Haymes'
appeal from ihe deportation or
der issued against him in March
by a special inquiry officer of
the Immigration Service.
The order was based on
charges that the S6-year -old
Haymes should have been ex
cluded from continental United
States after a trip to Hawaii in
May, 1953, because he obtained
exemption from U. S. Military
service in World War II as a
citizen of a neutral country.

Corrigan then established that
the witness was an expert in
'forensic pathology," which he
said had to do with persons con
nected with the field of law.
Dr. Adelson testified he had
collaborated in writing a book
on "The Doctor in the Court
room" which included advice on
how to testify.
Corrigan was attempting to go
into every move made by the
coroner's office in the official ex
amination of Mrs. Sheppard's
body. Dr. Adelson, as the state's
first witness yesterday, testified
the body had 35 separate injuries
as a result of the beating.

Exchange Rules
Beaten by Ohioan

van Harlingen, late of the Hague,
Netherlands, has beaten both in
ternational exchange restrictions
and the local housing shortage.
The 52-year-old stonemason
came here in 1950, but was
forced to leave behind him some
10,000 guilders which the Nether
lands' government would not per
mit to be taken from the coun
try. Now, however, van Harlingen,
his wife and son have gotten
their money out of Holland in
kind and have a house to show
for it, and a charming one at
that.
Van Harlingen, with the help
of relatives still in Holland,
managed to buy a pre-cut six
room house, complete with an
eight-ton tile roof, in the old
country. It was crated and ship
ped here.
The frozen assets in Holland
were applied to the house which
cost 22,000 guilders. It cost $546
to ship it to Baltimore, $789 for
U. S. customs fees and $550 to
bring the 24 tons of bungalow
here.
He Was Ready
Van Harlingen was ready for
it with a 20x43-foot basement al
ready dug. Since the house ar
rived in January, van Harlin
gen has put in all his spare time
assembling it. He has done all
his own work, except installing
the electrical system and the
radiant heating.
The family is in the house
now, though a large section of
the front roof is only temporary.
Many of the tiles did not stand
the trip, were broken and must
now be replaced.
The house has gleaming East
Indian Mahogany siding, each
piece of which had to be care
fully nailed in place through pre
drilled holes since it would split
if a nail were driven through it
in ordinary fashion. To support
the heavy roof, many more
sturdy braces, joists, etc., than
are found in conventional houses
here were included in the giant
"do-it-yourself" package which
arrived in a freight car, careful
ly packed in 175 separate crates.

naturalized next week.
Jakub Fruchtengarten, who
came to the United States from
England five years ago, will re
turn here in time to take a citi
zenship oath with 350 others be
f o r e Federal District Judge
Claude McColloch.
Fruchtengarten, 32, was cap
tured by the Russians and spent
two years in a forced labor
camp. Later he was permitted to
join the Polish army, and served
in seven countries.

tainments -at Camp White have
been held recently under the
sponsorship of the Veterans Ad
ministration Voluntary Services,
according to Mrs. Reese Braley,
VAVS chairman for the Ameri
can Red Cross. Among them was
a Halloween party, held Oct. 29,
in addition to the regular sched
ule of parties the last Wednes
day of each month, by the VAVS,
and the first Wednesday, by the
Junior Red Cross.
Entertainment and refresh
ments are furnished by the Red
Cross units, with refreshments
usually furnished by ladies of
the local churches.
