Communist Hungary seems to
be in serious trouble.
Trouble is nothing new, of
course, to the
9,300,0 0 a or
dinary people
who live un
der the Red
dicta torship.
But things are
so bad that
Communist
leaders are
sharing the
trouble.
A grandiose

agricultural Hungary to heavy
industry as part of the Krem
lin's master plan of exploiting
Soviet satellites has failed.
The Communists are trying
to emphasize production of food
and consumer goods to an extent
which constitutes an industrial
revolution.
But the reconversion is not
Agoing smoothly. About 200,000
people have been thrown out of
work. Travellers arriving in Vi
enna from Budapest say that the
total may reach 600,000 to
800,000.
. The country is facing its sec
ond miserable winter, and re
ports tell of growing public un
rest. Things got so bad as far back
as the summer of 1953 that the
Red leaders sensed danger.
Rakosi Steps Out
Bullet-headed Matyas Rakosi,
chief of the Hungarian Commu
nist party who had sponsored the
conversion to heavy industry,
stepped out of his post as prime
minister in favor of ImreNagy,
another high party leader who
is also an agricultural expert.
Nagy announced what he
called a "new course." He prom
ised more food and less industri
alization. He said there would be
more consumer goods and told
farmers they might leave the big
collective farms and till land of
their own.
The farmers responded so en
thusiastically that Nagy had to
clamp down new regulations to
save the collectives.
Last winter was one of the
worst Hungary has suffered in
modern years. '
There were shortages of food,
coal and electric power. There
was an epidemic of influenza as
the result of bad living condi
tions. Things Get Worse
Things have got worse rather
than better since then. Rakosi is
reported to have gloated at the
failure of the Nagy "new
course."
It is reported that feeling be
tween Nagy and Rakosi is so bad
that it is becoming an open
squabble. There are hints that a
purge is not unlikely in the near
future.
Nagy, in an article published
in Budapest on Oct. 20, severely
criticized the "dictatorial leader
ihip by one person" which had
existed in Hungary for five years
before he took office. The dicta
tor was Rakosi.
In another article published at
about the same time, Erno Gero,
minister of state and director of
I economic planning, warned that

Two Major Army
Headquarters To
Shift To Japan"
Seoul, Korea 0J.R) The Unit
ed States announced today the
transfer of two major Army com
mand headquarters from Korea
to Japan in the latest move to
strengthen its strategic position
in the Far East.
Main headquarters of Gen.
Maxwell D. Taylor's 8th Army
will be shifted to Camp Zama
near Tokyo this month, with Tay
lor becoming commander of all
U. S. ground forces in Japan,
Korea and Okinawa. An'advance
headquarters will remain in
Seoul.
Also going to Japan this
month "at reduced strength"
will be the headquarters of the
U. S. IX Corps, which became
operational in Korea Sept. 23,
1950. The IX Corps will go to
Sendai, on Japan's main , island
of Honshu, under command of
Lt. Gen. Thomas F. Hickey. It
will take over from the XVI
Corps, which is to be deactivated.
Taylor is scheduled to become
commander of Army Forces Far
East (AFFE), a job currently
held by Gen. John E. Hull, who
will retain his posts as United
Nations' and Far East com
mander. V
24 Division To Withdraw
Under the U. S. redeployment
program to date, the 40th, 45th,
2oth, 2nd and 3rd infantry divi
sions hate left Korea. In addi
tion, the 24th is scheduled . to
be withdrawn. The 7th Infantry
ana 1st Marine divisions will re
main. Earlier this fall, the U. S. 5th
Air Force headquarters moved
from Korea to Nagoya, Japan,
and over half of its combat units
were shifted to Japan, Pacific
Island bases and the United
States.

Hart's Location, N.H. (U.R)
This tiny White ' Mountain
hamlet voted 6-4 in favof of the
Democrats today after favoring
the Republicans by one vote in
1952.
Hart's location, the first com
munity in the nation to cast its
ballots in today's elections, vot
ed one minute after midnight
and the, votes were counted six
minutes later.
The voting was 6 to 4 in fav
or of the Democrats down the
ballot except for a split vote for
state senator in which the out
come was 5-5.
Hart's Location favored Dem
ocrat Gerard L. Morin over .Re
publican incumbent Sen. Styles
Bridges for a full term; and
Democrat Stanley J. Betley to
Republican Rep. Norris Cotton
who sought to succeed the late
Sen. Charles Tobey, (R-N.H.), for
a short term.
Washington (U.R) The Agri
culture Department has reported
that American farm crop exports
in August declined 13 per cent
below August last year to a total
S815.648.000. .

first hits. Washington Square is
still one of the most picturesque
residential sections in Manhat
tan. You can still get a little flat

Slate Forestry
Planting Program
Gets Under Way-
Salem (U.R) The State For
estry Department's winter tree
planting program got under way
this "week with two ten-man
crews initiating reforestation
operations in the Tillamook
Burn and part of Clatsop coun
ty. One crew is from the south
fork camp on the Wilson river
and the other recruited out of
Forest Grove.
To Increase Crews
Forestry officials said the
crews would be gradually in
creased to 70 men at. the peak
of the planting season. More
than 500.000 trees mostly two
year old Douglas t firs will be
planted each week, with the
program expected to' be com
pleted in 10 weeks.
Some 4,500,000 seedlings,
grown at the Oregon forest nurs
ery, will be used. .
To Replant Sardine Burn
Late in the winter, planting
crews will be recruited . from
Mill City and Gates to carry
out forest rehabilitation meas
ures in the disastrous 1951' Sar
dine Creek Burn in Marion
county.
Since the . sttae-sponsored re
habilitation program started in
1949, more than 18,000,000 seed
lings have been planted, mostly
in northwest Oregon. In addi
tion, 36,049 acres have been
aerially seeded in the Tillamook
Burn, another 5000 acres in
Clatsop county. '
Monroe Store Ordered To Reinstate Workers
Portland (U.R) The Na
tional Labor Relations Board
yesterday ordered the Monroe
Feed store, Monroe, Ore., to re
instate and pay back wages to
13 employees discharged a year
ago for union activities.
The NLRB also ordered store
manager Wayne Giesy to stop
interfering with organizing of
the employees and to .bargain
with their, representatives.
The firm had appealed from
the decision of the board's trial
examiner, Wallace Royster, but
the board itself upheld Royster's
findings.
An official of the Grain Mill
ers local 61 (AFL) estimated
that the reinstatement order
would cost the feed store about
$20,000. The examiner found,
and the board affirmed, that
the 13 men were fired last Oct.
30 for union activities.

The plea is from Secretary of
State Earl T. Newbry, who re
minds that Oregon is going in
for a new system of motor ve
hicle license plates because the
state is just getting too big to
continue with the' old system of
straight numbers.
He stated today: "During the
next license period, beginning
Jan. 1, 1955, the number of
motor vehicles in Oregon will
exceed the one million mark.
Important Changes '
"To assure an accurate and
economical system of register
ing these vehicles, it was nec
essary to make important
changes in plate numbering. The
addition of an alphabetical pre
fix, plus the decentralized han
dling of the plates in field of
fices, makes the granting of
special numbers a wasteful pro
cess. "I am therefore asking the
cooperation of Oregon citizens
in not requesting special num
bers." Speaking of special numbers,
here are the three under the
present system of straight num
bers: Gov. Paul L. Patterson's
official car, No. 1; Secretary of
State Newbry's car, No. 2; State

prohibition," Brown said.
