Survey Shows Scientists
Not Eccentric, Retiring
Chicago U.R) The notion
that scientists are an eccentric
and retiring lot is all wrong, a
survey says.
The study, which took a year
to complete, analyzed the per
sonality traits of 514 scientific
and technical staff members at
Illinois Institute of Technology
and the Armour Research Foun
dation. The psychologists who made
the study found that, contrary to
popular belief, the best scien
tists are "original and enthusias
tic leaders."
They also found that the more
orilliant the scientist, the more
outside activities he is likely to
enter. The more "retiring" sci
entists are apt to be the "less pro
ductive" laboratory workers.

on the situation in London re
vealed that office receptionists
sleep the most. They average 66
hours a week. Policemen sleep
65 hours weekly; postmen, 64;
teachers, 63, and saleswomen in
department stores, 62 hours.
British secretaries sleep about 61
hours a week. In Britain, those
getting along with the least sleep
are bus conductors. They aver
age only 51 hours of slumber a
week.

Climbed Fast .
Nine years ago Eddie was the
poor son of a sidewalk vegetable
peddler in South Philadelphia.
He used his voice mainly to
shout his father's wares in side
streets and alleys.
Today, at only 24, he has an
audience of 41,000,000 for his

claims his radio show is heard
more than any other vocalists.
Since 1952 he has been RCAr
Victor's top-selling record artist.
He has racked up 17 song hits
including three that sold more,

Rich, Famous and Engaged
Eddie is rich, famous, and
engaged to marry a movie
celebrity. The romance of the
"nice, young, happy" pair has

Behind the scenes some Holly
wood observers speculate as to
how long the wonder lad can
keep his winning streak. As one

Mamie Didn't Like Him
Show ; business-'is "an 'uneven
existence. Eddie, is one of the
golden boys who hits the enter
tainment world once a decade.
Frank Sinatra, perhaps, was the
last. After a similar success he
hit unhappy snags; so did Dick
Haymes.
Last spring Eddie was ac
cused of "getting too big for his
britches." Once he visited Mo
cambo nightclub with sexy star
let Mamie Van Doren and cross
ly refused to pose for photog
raphers. He left the club alone
to pick up his car, asking Mamie
to meet him outside. She did
to find Eddie parked across the
street yelling, "Come - on hop
in:' Miss Van Doren snapped to
friends," "This kid isn't grown
up enough for me," and never
dated him again.
Called 'Cocky Kid'
Eddie was sized up by one
columnist as "a cocky kid who
never remembers you." But in
recent months he has leveled off
and appears gracious to reporters
and co-workers. One friend says
his romance with Debbie helped
"because he has to share the
limelight with her."
"I love everything this girl
wears, says, thinks or does," Ed
die beamed at his engagement
party. When a reporter inquired
if he.v would like her if she
wasn't a movie star, he replied
firmly, "Yes!"
Eddie wears a perpetually
happy, friendly air and frankly
says about his fame, "I love
every minute of it." But his
colleagues agree he is "a smart
show business operator" who
had an intense drive to be a star.

The nylon hosiery situation
seems to be straightening itself

has been inspired by the bitter
complaints of our countrywomen.-The
ladies have been really
indignant about those nylons.

Despite "thumbs down" re
views by the majority of the
critics, the stage musical "Can
Can" is now in its 76th week
and selling out every perform
ance! After all, it isn't the drama
critics who determine the box
office success of a play. It is the
ticket brokers.
