Former Oregonan Editor Dies in North Carolina
Portland (U.R) Otho Clarke
Leiter, 76, former city editor of
the Oregon Journal and the Ore
gonian, died at Black Mountain,
N. C, Thursday, Portland friends
said they have learned Saturday.
Leiter was. city editor of the
Oregonian from 1904 to 1914,
He became city editor of the
Journal in 1915. He also pub
lished the Eastern Oregon Ob
served at La Grande for a time
and was managing editor of the
old Portland Telegram from 1920.
to 1927. . : ' -
He became professor of Journ
alism at University of Illinois in
1828. He retired in 1947.

- Thfs past month, ! have attempted to express myself to as
many people as possible, by letter and speech. I realize that there
,are roary people that ! have been unable to contact, and the pur
rctse of this letter is to express to the citizens of Medford my
position and qualifications.
I should like to state thai I am not sponsored by, or represent,
any special group of people. I have not been Influenced by any
group to run for this office of Mayor. I am running for this office
because I am interested In the future of the City of Medford and
' would like to be a part of it.
I am a Public Accountant and businessman, schooled in the
business of Public Accounting and Business Management, ,with
experience of seventeen years In these fields. I am interested in
a Progressive, well managed City Government and I am in a posi
tion to offer you my services, being fully aware of the responsibil
ities of the off ice of Mayor.
I should like to ask that you give my candidacy your earnest

Shady Cove A campaign to
render safe "death traps" for
childrensuch as abandoned ice
boxes, old wells, and so on is
being started by the auxiliary
to Steelhead post, Veterans of
Foreign Wars, it was announced
last week.
Cooperating In the project
are the Shady Cove Lady Lions
and the Parent-Teacher associa
tions of Shady Cove and Elk
Trail. The groups plan a house-
to-house canvass In the elfort to
eliminate death traps.
Children Killed
Statistics were quoted by aux
iliary members vto show that
each year more children are
kkllled by thoughtlessly unpro
tected hazards. A spokesman
said it is difficult for many to
realize that a familiar object
like an ice box could be such a
trap, or that an old well could
be forgotten.
Old ice boxes arid refrigera
tors will be carted away free by
the groups. For others, owners
are asked to see that the hinges
and door catches be removed to
prevent playing children from
locking themselves in. In cases
where they are used for non
c61d storage, owners were asked
to remove the rubber Insulating
gasket around the door, and to
drill holes in the cabinet to per
mit air to enter.

As for old wells, it was rec
ommended that they be filled in,
or, if this is impractical, should
be strongly fenced.
"Safety for our children by
Thanksgiving," is the slogan
adopted by the campaign work
ers, and the drive will continue
during November, Residents in
the upper Rogue area are re
ported to be taking considerable
interest in the project, and hope
was expressed that those in oth
er parts of the county also join
the program.
Prizes will be given to the
person bringing in evidence that
such death traps have been de
stroyed or made non-hazardous.

ing clams.
And then he
opened one
and .came up
on one of the
biggest mys
teries in clam
shucking his
tory. "Well," said
bid Clarence,
"I'll be shuck-

What the 80-year-old shucker
had come upon' in his work at
Cy Ellis' restaurant on the wharf
here was a clam with a message
inside.
"Never in my borned days,"
said the 80-year-old man. He
scratched the top of his bald
head.
Still a Mystery ;
' That was a couple of weeks
ago, and the message still is a
mystery.
. Clarence took his discovery
right to his best customer, Alfred
E, Roldes, a food broker, a na
tive of Paris and a former chef.
Roldes blinked. Sure enough,
right there on the inside shell
was a message scratched in some
mysterious fashion, and dated
4-2-43, April 2, 1943. It was
signed by a double set of initials.
"M. O. T. U. M. I.!' Something
like kids used to carve into the
trunks of lovely old trees. May
be "Mary loves Ulysses." '
. Shuckers all over this area
have been puzzling over the dis
covery ever since. -Mr.
Cheek, by the by, knows
his clams, and if he doesn't no
body does. v
Half Way to Hearen,
Even at 80 he still can hull 15
clams a minute when business
presses. He figures that in a life
time of shucking he has opened
at least 20,000,000 clams and
stacked end to end or top to
top, that would make a long
chain, or a pile half way to
heaven. . , -,

80, he still stands on his feet
and works his hands eight hours
a day. ,
But to get back to why the
mystery is a mystery. Mr. Cheek
the old timer, puts it this way;
