Most people
consider , "ma
ture" to mean
that person
is acting his
age. If he is an
adult, he acts
like an adult,
not like a

j other hand, the person who be-
haves like one younger than
i himself is labelled immature.
Roughly speaking, this inter
j pretation of maturity is correct,
j A mature persons does act-his
j ge. But back of this is the
1 fundamental problem of adjust
I ment. He can act his age be
! cause he is well adjusted to what
j our society expects of a person
j of his age. . ..
j Not all people are mature in
! every area of their behavior. In
j fact, an all-round mature per
! son is a rare specimen. Most
! people are both mature and im-
!' mature. In some of their be
havior they act their age, while
in other respects, equally im-
portent, they act childishly.
; Why, you may ask, do they
! not grow up all over? Why don't
! they reach adult level in their
emotional b e h a v i o r, f or ex
'?' ample, as they do in their social
; behavior or in their physical
; growth?
- The answer is that they have
; not learned to do so. This may
i be because they never had an
: opportunity to learn to be ma
j ture in certain areas of their
! behavior. Or, as sometimes hap-
pens, they may have tried to be
j mature but. some obstacle they
: could not overcome stood in
; their way.
I Whatever, the cause, the fact
. remains that they are not all
j around mature people. This, in
; turn, means that they make
! poorer adjustments to adult life
j than they could otherwise make.
, Only when a person approaches
j the ideal of well-rounded ma
j turity can he hope to be really
j successful and happy. This mat
j ter will be discussed in columns
I during the next few weeks.

disillusionment i about people
nd their behavior. He finds that
they very often do not act ac
cording to what they profess to
believe. Most people who are
cynical become so during their
idealistic teens. They expect
people to act in one way, es
pecially if they accept them on
the basis of what they say they
believe. Then they are disiUu-

icism as they grow older; some
never do.

to earn the extra money by

with the opinion she expressed,

he protests after she has acted,
it is too late to do anything
about it.

of the Jackson County Chamber

board of directors Friday.
The first meeting will be held
tomorrow at noon in the Jackson
hotel at a specially-constructed
"round-table," officials said.
Purpose of the meetings will
be for a weekly briefing session
on what's doing in the commun-
