American League Rejects Sale
Of A's to Philadelphia Group

now that the American league
has blocked the sale of the team
to a Philadelphia syndicate.
"I still hope to bring the A's
to Kansas City," said Chicago
real estate man Arnold Johnson.
"They, the league's club owners
' turned down my competitor and
. naturally that makes me feel op
: tlmlstic. I will meetith my at

In Kansas City, the once-d-!-'
appointed fans weren't letting
their enthusiasm .carry - them
away but Mayor William E.
" Kemp declared, ."Our feelings
have not changed We'll still be
awfully happy to have them,"
said Kemp. ' ' -.
Johnson Only Bidder Left
Johnson's Kansas City group
was left alone in the bidding for
the Athletics' franchise when
the American league club owners
voted in a meeting here against
approval of the Mack family's
sale of the' team to an eight-man
. Philadelphia syndicate. .

only alternative that seems open
to the Macks now would be to
go on operating the team them
selves and that chances of that
seem remote.
But there is no certain solu
tion of the problem in sight and
Dan Topping, owner of the New
York Yankees who spearheaded
the opposition to the Philadel
phia group, admitted as much
when he said, "Now we are

Transfer of a franchise to a
new city requires a vote of six
of the eight league club owners,
and thus a move might be
blocked by the anti-Kansas City
group. But Johnson1 maintains
that a new vote on his offer isn't
necessary, since the league voted
approval of a transfer to Kansas
City at its meeting in Chicago
on Oct. 12. ,
"Yesterday's action bore out
my contention that the club was
. really sold to me In Chicago,"
said Johnson. .
Rejection of the Philadelphia
group came after a 6V4-hour
meeting, which began with the
. owners listening to a personal
plea - from 92-year-old Connie
Mack for approval of the deal.
. The beloved "Mr. Mack" made
his appeal, then rested in anoth
er room while the owners delib
erated. He came back to listen
to the vote that went against
him, then' left the room on the
arm of his- chauffeur-valet and
walked shakily away with tears
in his eyes.

Before their first bout on Jan.
30, 1953, in the Garden, "Violent
Vlnce" was favored at 8-1. He
won the unanimous decision by a
good margin but had his knees
buckled by left hooks in the
fourth and 10th rounds.

are much lower for tonight be
cause Martinez now is in the
throes of serious managerial dif
ficulties and because Flore is be
. lieved to be the "sharper" due
to the better brand of his recent
opponents.

Stream Clearing
Getting Results
Portland (U.R) The State
Game Commission said yester
day its strong clearance pro
gram is producing results salm
on and steelhead are showing up
in places they haven't been seen
for some time.
In recent months, the commis
sion reported, streams such as
the Siletz, Yachats, Yaqulna,
Salmon and the Lewis and Clark
on the coast have undergone
stream clearance operations.
Many other smaller coastal
streams have received attention.
Loggers Cooperate
The commission credited the
logging industry with cooperat
ing wholeheartedly in the pro
gram. It said most of the clear
ance work has been done with
personnel and equipment of var
ious logging operations.
At present, commission crews
are working on Bald Mountain
creek and Floras creek on the
southwest coast to clear log
jams. The Sixes river will be
cleared by logging operators.
