fore the American Association
of Port Authorities. : . .
- "Although comparatively large
inner harbors permit the disper
sal of operations into a number
of secondary ports, the narrow
entrances of the natural West
Coast harbors are vulnerable,"
Yount said.
v He pointed out that although
tremendous efforts are being ex
pended for our protection, there
is no fool-proof defense against
an attack on the U. S. -
"As long as our potential
enemy has the ability to attack
us, even with only slight prospect
of success," Yount said, "we can
reasonably expect that some of
our primary seaports may be
hit,"

bomb the port of Hamburg,
Germany was permanently crip
pled by an attack of great force

Population Reduced
A summary of the principal
damage shows that the popula
tion was reduced by 64 per cent,
while 40 per cent of the houses
were destroyed, 50 per cent of
the warehouses and transit sheds
demolished, and at least 20 per
cent of the harbor facilities were
destroyed, Yount said.
"Reconstruction and recuper
ation were slow, principally be
cause of the evacuation of skilled
labor and the destruction of
stocks of building materials and
equipment," Yount- said. "Indus
trial production dropped to 13
per cent and never went above
64 per cent; ocean shipping drop
ped to 56 per cent and never ex
ceeded 87 per cent thereafter."

Larry George of the Veterans
Administration says that as of
now there are three-quarters of
a million volunteers working in
hospitals, mental and otherwise,
around the country. There are
now 172 vets hospitals.
Some of the volunteers run
errands. Others are non-pro
nurses. In the mental hospitals
they help out with a lot of prob
lems, according to Larry.
"Some of these cases are so
pathetic we have to teach them
how to eat," he said. "But when
these volunteers come in, it does
something for this kind of pa
tient. It makes them think that'
somebody gives a darn whether
they survive or not. And whoops
up their morale.
"We encourage some of the
volunteers, entertainers and the
others, to return. If the patient
recognizes somebody that has
been nice to him, we consider
that an improvement.
