Roosevelt Condon Fight for Lives
In California Election Campaign

San Francisco (U.R) Two
Democrats Franklin D. Roose
velt's eldest son, James, and Con
gressman Robert L. Condon
are fighting for their political
lives in California's election cam
paign.
In the Roosevelt race, the un
derlying issue is the charge of in
fidelity brought by his wife.
James has denied the accusation
and scored a resounding primary
victory despite it.
Issue of Loyalty
In Condon's case, the underly
ing issue is one of loyalty.
The . Roosevelt and Condon
Congressional battles by no
means are the only Important
ones on tap Nov. 2 in the nation's
second most populous state.
Twenty six other seats in Con
gress are at stake plus a key con
test for the V. S. Senate involv
ing , Republican Thomas - H.
Kuchel and Democrat Samuel W.
Yorty. ; There also is a bitter
gubernatorial battle between In
cumbent Republican Goodwin J.
(Goodie) Knight and Democrat
Richard P. Graves.
But the Condon and Roosevelt
contests are the ones catching
the voters' eyes in California
Roosevelt, target of charges
from his estranged wife that he
committed adultery with a dozen
women, 't seeking office from a
Los Angel' : district where Denv
ocrsts normally outnumber Re
publicans 2 to 1
The Roosevelts' divorce has
been nettled out of court. It has
not been an open issue In
speeches by his GOP opponent,
32-year-old Theodore R. Owings,
but it has come up repeatedly
in the "coffee klatch" type ol
politicking both men have em
ployed. : Owings, father of three chil
dren, never refers to Roosevelt's
personal life. But when asked
by voter In the district, usually
women, how he feels about it,
he Bays:
"I'm sure that most bf us want
a moral man in Congress."
This is Roosevelt's second try
for public office. He was de
feated by Earl Warren, now
Chief Justice . of the United
States, by a whopping 1,127,
898 votes in the 1950 guberna
torial election. But even Re
publican leaders concede his
chaances are excellent in the
26th Congressional District

Stun Challenge
Condon, a freshman member
of the House seeking a second
term, faces a stern challenge
from the man who almost beat
him two years ago, Attorney
John F. Baldwin. .
A World' War II infantryman
who won the Silver Star for
gallantry in Europe, Condon was
barred by the Atomic Energy
Commission in 1953 from wit
nessing A-bomb tests in Nevada
on grounds he was "not cleared
for classified information."
He also was linked in testi
mony before- the House Un
American Activities Committee
with b closed Communist Party
meeting in Oakland in 1948.
Both Charges Denied
Both charges have been de
nied heatedly by Condon who
says he is not, never has been
and never intends to be a Com
munist. He . has plugged the
theme that reelection will vindi
cate him. .
But Baldwin, defeated by Con
don by only 2000 votes out of

Muska's hole is 860 feet deep
now and every day it gets a foot
