quet Monday, Nov. 8, according
to Paul W. Hornbeck, resident
manager. The dinner meeting is
scheduled for 7 p. m. in the Pio
neer room of the Jackson hotel.

Water Transport
Tax Probe Asked
. The Dalles (u.R) City of
ficials and the Chamber of Com
merce at The , Dalles have de
manded an investigation into
charges that Oregon is destroy
ing water transportation on the
Columbia river with its taxation
laws.
The Dalles city council and
The Dalles Chamber of Com
merce requested Gov. Paul Pat
terson and the Oregon Develop
ment Commission to investigate,
following announcement by the
Inland Navigation Co. that it
was moving out of Oregon. The
company said taxation laws and
the lack of minimum rates for
railroads, trucks and , water-
borne carriers were to blame.
The Chamber of Commerce
asked Sen. John Hounsell . of
Hood River and Rep. Russell
Hudson of Wasco county to in
tervene with the governor re
garding the tax lawa. ...
The chamber's resolution said
loss of water commerce on the
river would be "to the detriment
of agriculture, industry, and
commercial enterprises."

Federal Medical
Payment Proposed
San Diego (U.R) Delegates
to the' 27th annual convention
of the Fleet Reserve Association
are studying a proposal where
in civilian doctors would be used
to treat dependents of service
men and would be paid by the
government -
The proposal was outlined to
1000 delegates by Dr. Frank B.
Berry, assistant secretary of de
fense. He said it was the result
of an extensive study by a' com
mittee headed by Dr. Harold
Moulton.
Under the plan medical de
pendents where military hos
pitals and doctors were unavail
able or overcrowded. In event
of hospitalization, patients would
be required to pay a small
amount. He said this probably
would be about $10 plus 10 per
cent.
''"The civilian doctors' pay
schedule, is being worked out
on the basis of Veterans Admin
istration and the Blue Shield
experience," Berry said.
British Factories
Laying Off Workers
London (U.R) British fac
tories have begun ordering lay
offs of their workers because of
the effects of the nationwide
dock strike. . ..
The walkout, now in its fourth
week, has choked off both the
flow of raw materials to the
factories and exports of finish
ed products.
The National Dock Labor
board said 43,232 men and 340
ships were idle today. This was
188 men and four ships less than
yesterday. ' v
Nearly 252 million dollars
worth of food and raw materials
Imports and nearly 196 million
dollars worth of manufactured
exports have been held up, the
Ministry of Labor reported. .
Strikers drifted back to work
in London in small numbers
which were largely cancelled by
the spreading of the walkout to
Manchester, the eighth port to

released by cooperating federal,
state and county predatory ani
mal project officials show.

the division of animal industry
in the State. Agriculture Depart
ment, said 13 of these were
taken ,in timber holdings of
Crown Zellerbach on the Tilla
mook burn where the company
has suffered heavy tree damage
and has cooperated with the of
ficial agencies.
Other animals taken during
September included 795 coyotes,
306 bobcats, 21 fox, one moun
tain lion, 129 badgers, 30 skunks,
103 racoons and 283 porcupines.
Hunters in Malheur county
accounted .for 326 of the' total
taken, nearly 200 of them coy
otes. Second highest take was
in Lake county, 143. Forty-six
hunters worked in September.
Cat Acts Like Dog;
Hunter's Best Friend

Bartay, a 58-year-old typogra
pher, has a 15-pound cat that
acts like a dog sometimes and
like no other cat on earth the
rest of the time.
For instance, Toby, a four-year-old
Persian and Angora
combination, is a hunter's best
friend. He stalks, "points" wing
ed game, waits while his master
shoots and then retrieves.
"And he doesn't disturb a
feather," Bartay said.
Toby has been hunting with
his master for three years.
"Just show him a gun and he
livens up," his master said.
Passing birds gets a low growl
from Toby, but nothing else
seema to matter. ' Bartay said
Toby doesn't fight or play with
other cats.
"But he sure likes tee cream,"
the owner added. "I split a pint
with him every night, any fla
vor, Toby's not particular." .

Extension Agents
To Attend Conference
Three Jackson county exten
sion agents will attend the state
extension service conference on
4-H club work at Corvallis, Nov.
2, through 4, according to Miss
Jean Brooks, 4-H agent.
The other 4-H agent here,
Glenn Klein, will also attend,
as will Miss Eula Wintermote,
agent in home economics.
Among conferenoe topics will
be policies,, new projects, time
analysis of agent work, basic
needs of club members ami new
ideas.
The agents will leave Monday
and return Thursday.

which killed two Warner Broth

jured another at a movie loca
tion site on the Fort Carson mili

Zero," a Korean war picture.
The Injured man, identified as
Paul Zook, 81, a temporary stu
dio employee from Colorado
Springs, was in the Fort Carson
hospital with shock and minor
