at the White House:
New security measures have
been taken In the vicinity of the
executive offices. Police booths
at either end of West Executive
Avenue, the street between the
old State Department and the
White House, are being manned
again on a round-the-clock basis.
For more than a year, the only
security on this street was a sin
gle park service policeman on
duty during the day time.
Shortly before the President
returned from Denver, however,
the guard booths at either end of
the steet went back on a 24-hour
footing.
Quite possible that the Eisen
howers can - move into the
Gettysburg farm, at least for
week ends, before the first of the
year. Reporters were not permit
ted Inside the house last week
end when the President and his
wife visited their place, but ex
ternal signs pointed to a rush
toward completion.
.Most of the construction
shacks have been torn down and
landscape men were working
furiously last Saturday on ter
races and shrubbery.
The President spent, much of
last Sunday afternoon basking
In the Indian summer sunshine
on the terrace of the main
house at Camp David, the Catoc
tin Mountain retreat, about 20
miles from Gettysburg.
And quite nice basking it was,
looking down a valley toward
Frederick at the leaves begin
ning to reach their peak of color
under nippy autumn tempera
tures that drop along with the
sun at dusk.
One of the most attractive
candidates in the fall elections is
Dr. Charmenz Lenhart, profes
sor of modern literature at
Women's College, University of
Virginia at Frederlckshurg. She
is running for Congress in the
8th Virginia district as . an in
dependent with Republican
backing against' the Democratic
incumbent. Howard Smith,

Wife Reconciled
Hollywood (U.R) Shakes
pearean actor John carradine
was reconciled with his actress
wife, Sonia Sorel, yesterday in a
tearful scene, and she carried
him out of a domestic relations
courtroom to celebrate their re
union. '
The gaunt Carradine. and his
estranged wife had gone to court
prepared to battle over' custody
of their three young children.
Carradine had filed for di
vorce, accusing her of being In
timate with a 24-year-old Brazil
ian student. She filed for separ
ate maintenance and custody of
the children.
But when they appeared in
court today, their attorneys re
quested that they be permitted to
talk privately with Superior
Judge Elmer D. Doyle. The Judge
conferred with them in his
chambers. The actor and actress
were crying, kissing and em.
bracing when they left the
judge's chambers. '
Suddenly, Mrs. Carradine
swept Carradine off his feet and
carried him bodily out of the
building.

House lobby, the professor-candidate
giggled and said, "I have
to laugh at this."
"What do you find so funny?"
"Oh, just that a citizen can
come to the White House and
talk to the President and then
be confronted by all you
people."
Notes from the precedent-setting
televised cabinet meeting
at the White House this week:
A battery of movie flood
lights was installed in the White
House driveway and each of the
cabinet officers was photograph
ed as he arrived just like a
Hollywood premiere except for
the absence of a crowd.
During the actual telecast and
broadcast cabinet session, no
spotlights were used on the prin
cipals. Floodlights were aimed
at the white ceiling of the cabi
net room and the "bounce light"
was more than sufficient for the
TV cameras, as well as the news-
reels and the still cameras.
The cameramen using film
were able to shoot around the
room at will, using a new hlglv
speed film which is about five
times faster than the speediest
film available to amateur pho.
tographers.
There were more than 50 peo
ple In the cabinet room during
the meeting.

He's invented an improved
loud speaker that not only pre
sents more clearly and faithfully
the voices, noise and music on
the outdoor screens, but which
also pipes In cool or warm air,
depending on the season.
The possibilities are apparent.
Drive-in theaters could remain
open all year round without the
winter-time hazard of patrons as
phyxiating themselves by using
their own automobile, heaters.
The 38-year-pld Takach, who
expects bis patent to be granted
soon, estimates one of bis finish

As he's designed it, a telesco
pic tube is attached to each de
vice which is inserted in a car
window, leaving - about a one

warm, air through the single
telescopic tube which pipes In
the sound. No wires, or connec
tions are exposed, Takach point
ed out, and the tube itself hangs
downward when not in use, thus
extending the life of the equip
ment, since dust end moisture
are largely kept out.
