the Coast Guard he was turning

a blank check from his wife. "I
have the utmost confidence - in
my ability and my judgment in
the weather."

neck injuries early yesterday
afternooa when the pickup truck
he was driving was hit by an
emDtv log truck at the intersec
tion of Highway 62 and Antelope i
rd., according to state police.
The truck was driven by Au
gustine Fred Lewis, Eagle Point.
Everline told police he stopped
on Antelope rd. before entering
the highway, but did not see
the truck coming. The pickup
was badly smashed, officers
said, and the truck was dam
aged somewhat. No citations
were Issued.
A 17B7 resolution authorized
an Army of 700 men.

plied this winter on sections of
the new lour-jane iiignway
section from Medford to Wil
low Springs, according to W. B.
Merrill, resident state highway
engineer.
-This will wind up paving on
the project until ; next spring,
except for top paving to be ap
plied near Crater high school
at Central Point if the weather
permits.

Point. For this winter, the top,
or final course, will be on the
west two lanes, with a base
course on the east two lanes.
This will leave the west lanes
slightly higher, but no trouble
is expected because two lanes
each way are provided.
Paving from Central Point to
Willow Springs will be revers
ed, with the top coat on the east
side and base cost on the west.
Paying is nearing completion
on the Willow Springs intersec
tion where the new section over
Blackwell hill begins. This sec
tion will be opened to traffic
Thursday night, Merrill stated.
Varies In Width
The hill section has two lanes
from Willow Springs toHhe base
of the hill, three lanes on the
summit approach, and four lanes
on the top; three lanes down
the west side and two lanes into
the Blackwell hill-Rock Point
section completed last year.
Both base and , top coats
through the city of Central
Point are completed. Four lanes
are provided for through travel,
with a parking lane on each
side. Only street intersection ap
proach work remain to be done.
Target date on the project
was originally Oct. 31, but an
extension will now be asked for
next summer. The R. A., Heintz
company, Portland, is doing the
grading and paving, and Besson
ette and Graff, Medford, con
structed the three overpasses.
A portion- of the work began
in November, 1953. Most of it
has been done since last spring.
Finishing ' work ' will probably
begin around April, 1955, if the
weather permits.

ing at the Memory Gardens Me
morial Park, Arnold lane and
Bellinger rd., it was announced
today by William S. Ferris, who
with Carroll W. Smith is operat
ing the new cemetery,
The building, designed by
Architect Ben H. Todd, wUl be
of flagstone and glass construc
tion, .on one story.
Ferris has invited Inspection
of the area, and pointed out that
it was carefully chosen for favor
able characteristics for the purpose.
Access Roads Help

in national forests are helping
to bring the annual timber cut
in the United States closer to
the annual tree growth, accord
ing to Ira J. Mason, chief of the
forest service division of management.
Mason, In a Teport to the 45th
annual Pacific Logging Congress
here yesterday, however, said
that federal and private opinions
still differed on the estimated
$194,000,000 worth of access
roads yet to be built. .
Mason said the national forest
timber harvest two years ago
was 5,200,000,000 board feet
aealnst an annual growth of
6,000,000,000 feet. The harvest
increased by 200,000,000 last
year, but the lumber strike this
year will probably mean no in
crease, Mason said. '

tion. Marlene Dietrich, appearing

take Miss Hutton's first show
while Peter Lind Hayes and
Mary Healy, appearing at the
Sands, took over Miss Hutton's
second show.
"It wasn't that I had collap
sed," Miss Hutton said, "but I
folt that I could at any moment
so-1 asked the-Desert Inn for
the night off."

through a four-week engage
ment which she says will be her
last before retiring from show
business.
