Wild Women
Girls at women's colleges
drink more strong liquor than
coeds. So recent research in
dicates. It was ever thus. I re
call when I was being educated
in New England that the stu
dents at the girls colleges were
much wilder in every way than
the coeds. This was especially
true at a girls' college not far
from Amherst, Mass. I mention
no names.

Horoscopes
Are there horoscopes for
horses? Has any stargazer ever
picked winners that way? The
celebrated stargazer, Evangeline
Adams, believed in. horoscopes
for dogs, cats and horses. She
claimed to have made a horo
scope of one of her dogs which
showed it would be killed in
an accident. The dog was run
over by a truck. While Miss
Adams didn't make a practice
of reading horoscopes of race
horses with a view to picking
for winners, she did predict the
victory of one thoroughbred for
an owner, who was one of her
clients. I understand this horo
scope suggested a change of
jockeys. Seems, according to
Miss Adams, the horse and his
regular jockey were not astro-
logically compatible.
Marrying Record
Ava Gardner has been mar
ried three times, Lana Turner
four times and Rita Hayworth
four times. All these cinema
luminaries are under forty. The
record for film stars for the
most marriages at the youngest
age is held by the foreign star,
Eva Bartok. She is 24 and has
been married three times, is
planning a fourth marriage. '
Commuters
A commuter has been de
scribed as "a man who spends
his life riding to and from his
wife." An apt description. The
service offered commuters in
the New York and New Jersey
area is terrible. It would seem
these regular customers would
rate streamlined, air-conditioned
trains with reserved seats and
Most Closures
Will Be Lilted
Salem (U.R) Gor. Paul
Patterson said today that nearly
all regulated or permit closures
in western Oregon will be lifted
effective at midnight tonight, a
move which will open most of
the state to deer hunters who
take to the woods Saturday.
Only areas which may. not be
affected are in the Rogue River
national forest and a small area
in the Prospect-Butte Falls reg
ion. However, it was indicated
that the areas might be opened
in time for deer season, if rains
continue.
Hunters in eastern Oregon
will encounter few restricted
areas, forestry officials said.
They said the only exceptions
were' small slash and operating
areas in the Deschutes national
forest and the Summer lake rim
of the Fremont national forest.
Some restrictions also were ex
pected to continue in the Kla
math area.
Heart Disease
Victory in Sight
Washington (U.R) The
National Heart institute said to
day that many medical author
ities are now confident the bat
tle against most heart diseases
can be won in the next 25 years,
Institute officials gave this en
couraging report to the House
Commerce committee as it op
ened hearings on major diseases
and what's being done about
them.
The old idea that the nation's
number one killer must be con
sidered "inevitable and uncon
querable" has been replaced by
a "new philosophy," they said.
This holds that the disease can
be beaten.
. "On the part of many medical
authorities and scientists," the
institute said, "there is today
confidence that within the next
quarter of a century the nation
can master much, if not all, of
the untimely death and disabil
ity caused by the major types of
heart diseases."
Funds Available
For Dalles Dam
Portland (U.R) An ad
ditional $9,000,000 has been
made available for The Dalles
dam expenditure ceiling for the
fiscal year 1954, Col. Thomas H.
Lipscomb, Portland district en
gineer, said today.
He said it would provide suf
ficient funds for the year to per
mit construction to progress on
a schedule to provide power on
the line in 1957 as previously
planned.
Under the previous ceiling,
Col. Lipscomb said the first two
power units at The Dalles dam

drivers union meets today to
negotiations deadlocked over
the union's demand for a short
er work week.
The union has authorized a
strike in order to get its demand
for a 54-hour week and a five
per cent boost in take-home pay.
A. Campbell McGill, secretary
of the Embalmers and Assistants
union, said the Oregon Funeral
Directors association which rep
resents' the undertakers had not
acted on the union's demand.
About 30 drivers and 50 em
balmers and assistants are in
volved in negotiations.
