Aid Paving of Sf reels
Chicago (U.R) Many cities
are using special assessments to
finance improvements in streets
and sewers, curbs and sidewalks.
The International City Mana
gers' Association reports its sur
vey showed that 991 cities over
9,000 population use special as
sessments for paving streets.
It also said 940 cities in the
same population group used that
in sewers; 930 for curbs and gut
method to finance improvements
in sewers; 939 for curbs and
gutters and 927 for sidewalks.
Repaving of streets,- water
main extensions, street lighting,
and off-street parking facilities
also are financed in many cities
by special assessments, the re
port said.
The survey said these four
methods were used generally in
special assessment projects; com
plete or partial advance payment
by property owners, temporary
loans from city funds, issuance
of certificates or liens the con
tractor for doing the work and
selling special assessment bonds.

Try To Be Nun Fails
Hollywood (U.R) June Haver
admitted today that her attempt
to be a nun has probably ended.
"It's doubtful," she yaid, she wlU
ever return to a convent. "It's
doubtful I will go back," she said
in an exclusive interview from
the living room of her mother,
Mrs. Marie Ottestad. "I just
physically am not able to do it."
When Miss Haver entered the
convent six months ago, friends
speculated she was saddened by
an unhappy marriage and the
death of her fiance, Dr. John

Master Bill Duggan opened
the Sams Valley Grange meeting
September 19 with a report on
agriculture from Al ' Straus.
Straus reported 70 carloads of
seed barley would be shipped
from the valley, largely to wheat
growers in Eastern Oregon be
cause of loss of wheat acreage
due to allotment. Due to demand
barley has risen in price from
$92 a ton to $70.
- Lester James reported that the
new proposed addition to the
Sams Valley-Beagle Soil Conser
vation district would add .about
830,000 acres, a good part of
which would be timber. -
'It was brought out that local
beef prices were four cents to
five cents below markets In Port
land and San Francisco, and that
several livestock growers were
finding, it profitable to ship their
stock to these more distant
markets.
Lloyd Beers reported that the
bridge from Table Rock to Sams
Valley was to be. completed by
October 15.
Ethel Duggan, reporting for
A.T.C. announced that the Octo
ber 3 meeting would start with
a potluck dinner at 7:30 p.m.
Lecturer Wes McDonough an
nounced that Booster Night will
be held October 17. Ralph James
suggested that ' each member
bring as many friends as pos
sible since a good program and
evening have been planned.

Gilbert Mack stated that 98
pupils had been enrolled 13
first graders, 11 second graders,
9 in the 3rd, 12 each in the 4th,
5th, 6th and 7th, and 17 in the
8th.

Idaho Hills Interest
Part-Time Prospectors
Moscow, Idaho UJ5 The
famed Idaho hills of gold rush
days still hold interest for part
time prospectors according to A.
W. Fahrenwald, dean of the Uni
versity of Idaho's College of
Mines and director of the Bureau
of Mines and Geology.
"We have received between
700 and 800 mineral samples
every year since the depression,"
Fahrenwald reported. "Although
the. number remains about the
same, the kinds of samples and
the questions asked about them
vary from year to year."
In the depression men hunted
gold until they could lind jobs.
Strategic metals were the goal
of the mineral-hunters during
World War II. Today the $10,000
bonus offered by the Atomic
Energy Commission for uranium
discoveries lures prospectors.
Gold and silver are virtually forgotten.
Newly discovered deposits of
kyanite, a high-grade silicate
used in the manufacture of
porcelain for sparkplugs, and
monazite In rock form also at
tract today's prospectors.

was scheduled today to take off
for Tokyo after slipping unan
nounced into Honolulu aboard

Miss Cochran, holder of the
L world's 500 kilometer Jet speed
record, amvea yesterday on a
plane carrying top Air Force
officers. She was listed on the
passenger manifest as simply
"Col. Cochran."

seph Cannon, commanding gen
eral of the Air Force Tactical
Fighter command, discovered
that "Col. Cochran" was Ameri
ca's leading aviatrix.
Miss Cochran is a colonel in

A last application of fertilizer
should be applied to our lawns
now. Use from Vi to 1 lb. of
Ammonium Sulfate to each
10x10 foot area. If you use a
complete fertilizer use 3 or 4
lbs. in a 10x10 foot area. Be sure
to water the lawn thoroughly
after the fertilizer is applied or
severe burning of grass may re
sult.
Most of our grasses have a ten
dency to become dormant with
the approach of short cool days
and long nights. When they go
into their dormancy and stop
growing, they lose their green
color and by spring will have a
yellowish appearance. An appli
cation of fertilizer now will
stimulate the plants enough to
overcome this tendency to go
dormant and the grass will re
main nice and green all winter.
In addition to keeping the
grass greeh it will also encourage
root growth which will thicken
the mat of grass. A good thick
mat of grass is the best control
for such annual weeds as crab
grass. It will also help to keep
out new seedlings of such peren
nials as dandelion and plantain.
Where dandelion and plantain
are already established in a lawn,
now would be a good time to
spray them with 2-4D. There are
a wide variety of weed killers on
the market but the most effective
ones are those containing 2-4D.
These are sold under a wide va
riety of brand names but the la
bel will list 2-4D as the effective
ingredient.
. Until the atomic era, uranium
was merely a byproduct of ra
dium and vanadium mines, use
ful for coloring glass, pattern,
and artificial teeth.
