Of Girl Scouting Movement
(Editor's Mote: This is the
first in a series of articles on
Girl Scooting submitted to
The Mail Tribune by officials
of the United Medfoxd Cru
sade.) A ten year old made this wise
statement; "A good citizen is a
person that's proud he's what he
is. He knows he's got something
that helps him be better than if
he never had it Citizenship
makes it so he has rights, but he
has to keep on working to make
sure they'll stay and get better.
He has to work with other people
who want rights like most peo
ple want them. He likes to live
in this country. He likes to live
in the world too."
Our country is strong and
great because our citizens make
it so. By supporting Youth or
ganization which emphasize gooa
citizenship, we are helping guar
antee, that the deep seated great
ness of our country will continue
As the ten year old said, we
have to keep working, there is
no letting up or resting on. the
oars.
Girl Scouts begin this citizen-
shiD oroeram at the age of seven
and continue on thru 17. After
this great age these young wo
men have reached the age when
they are old enough to begin
giving service as leaders back to
other erowine girls.
All along the way in the Girl
Scout program, community sup-
sort makes the training ox line
leadership available throughout
the year. A headquarter office is
maintained to keep the records
of the individual achievements
of these hundreds of girls. The
local Girl Scout office is in the
Citv Park at 500 East Main st
Trailerhouse Fire
Fatal to Contractor

contractor, burned to death when
fire destroyed his trailerhouse at
nearby Winchester Bay early
vesterdav.
Flames also damaged the home
of Walter Thompson, my which
the trailer was parked. Mac-
Donald's body was found on the
floor of the charred trailer
house.
Fire Chief Louis Vessel said
the fire apparently started from
a cigarette.
Two cirls saw the flames short
ly after 1 a.m. and awakened
Ihompson. Thompson said he
eot to the trailer door and could
- hear MacDonald moaning, but
could not enter because of the
intense heat.
A plastic tube developed for
packaging toothpaste, shaving
cream and oil paints, is said to
be so strong that a 200-pound
man can stand on it without rup
turing the sides or seams. The
tubes cost about the same as
. those now in use, but it is said
to be economical because the
contents won't be wasted by
bursting of tubes in shipping.

Welding Awards

James F. Lincoln Arc Welding
foundation announced here to
day fhaj six Oregon youths were
among the 107 farm boys
throughout the country who re
ceived awards in the founda
tion's annual arc welding pro
gram for high school boys.
Awards ranging from $600 to
$25 were made for descriptions
of a wide variety of home-arc-welded
repairs and labor saving
equipment.
Romuald R. Grant, Gaylord,
Ore., was high among winners
from his state with a $50 award
in the fifth-place division.
In sixth place, and winners of
$25 awards were Louis Stam of
Nyssa, who won a joint award
with Wayne Roberts and John'
ny Witty, both of Parma, Ida.;
Jerry Honey and Eugene Loy,
both of Nyssa, a joint award;
Bernard E. Elliott, Powell Butte
and John Stegen, Hubbard.
Alan Abner Appointed
Radio KVIII Manager
Ashland Alan Abner, 32, has
been appointed manager of ra
dion station KWIN, replacing
David Bigley, who resigned last
week, it was announced, by Rich
ard Moguire, president' of Rogue
Valley Broadcasters, Inc.
Abner took charge of the sta
tion Friday. He was released
from the Air Force in June after
three years in the service, most
of which was spent in Washing
ton, D.C., where he was connect
ed with the Voice of America.
The new station manager
worked at station KFJI, Klam
atb Falls, as news editor and
special events director for four
years before entering the Air
Force. He is married.
Retired Salem Farmer
Dies in Auto Crash
Salem (U.R) Eighty-year
old Earl Edwin Miller, retired
farmer of the Mehama area east
of Salem, was fatally injured
last night when his car and one
driven by Earl Nott of McMinn
ville collided at the junction of
new highway 22, on the North
Santiam route near Mehama.
Mr. and Mrs. . Scott were
treated at Salem general hospit
al for lacerations and bruises,
then released after examination.
Investigating state police said
Miller apparently misjudged the
distance the Nott car was from
him as he pulled onto the high

Meeting Today at T
Solicitors for the coming
United Medford Crusade Fund
drive will be trained during, a
meeting today at 7:30 p.m. in
the YMCA building in the use of
printed materials, and films to
present to prospective donors,
according to officials of the
drive. John Dellenback, presi-
aent, umc drive, will conduct
the meeting aided by others ex
perienced in this field.

former commanding officer of
the Salvation Army in Medford

Victim of Gunshot
In 'Fair' Condition'

treatment for a gunshot wound,
according to state police and hos-
nital attendant.

OLD CANNON BARREL

century cannon barrel has been

Smithsonian Institution, it was
announced today.

been in the Far East for six
years, almost three of them spent
in the hands of the Communists.
"We're terribly excited and
happy and nervous, said the
generals wife. Mrs. Mil area
Dean. "We're all in a turbulence
and when we get up to Travis
Field we'll be more so. We're
bound to be." ' . '
The fighting general, com
mander of the VJS. 24th Infan
try Division in the early holding
battles of the war, was captured
in August, 1950, after the Com
munists overran his outfit with
the fall of Taejon.
His wife and Mrs. Elizabeth
Dean, the general's mother, will
travel to Travis in the same
Army staff car that later will
bring the general back to Berk
eley
General to Retire
The remainder of the family,
including Dean's 25 year old
daughter, June, and her husband
Army Gapt. Robert C. Williams,
will go by private auto. With the
Williams will be their two chil
dren, the general's grandchil
dren. .
Dean plans to retire from the
Army after 30 years of service.
In a farewell ceremony before
leaving Tokyo, Dean received a
salute from an honor guard at
Gen. Mark W. Clark's Far East
headquarters.
Paul Kliss flamed
Dramatics Director
H. Paul Kliss, leading actor
with the Oregon Shakespearean
theater in Ashland for the past
three seasons, has been engaged
to act as director of dramatic
activities for the Oumansky
School of Dance and Drama,
Portland.
For the past two seasons Kliss
was also general stage manager
for the festival and directed try-
out. In addition to his work with
the festival, the actor appeared
with the Vimng Repertory com
pany in Ashland both as direc
tor and actor.
Before coming to Ashland
Kliss directed productions at the
Lobero and Alhecama theaters,
Santa Barbara, Calif., and at the
International House Showcase
theater, New York City. He has
degrees from the University of
California and did graduate
work at Catholic University of
America, Washington, D.C.
Piling on Moving
Flalcar Catches Fire
Hood River (U.R) Piling
on a moving flatcar caught fire
yesterday. -
The crew of an eastbound Un
ion Pacific freight train discov
ered the fire about 3 p.m. near
Viento park. The train was stop
ped and the burning car taken
to a siding at Meno four miles
west of here.
A grass fire about a mile long
alongside the track was started
by dropping poles. Firemen said
four homes were endangered for
a time.
Firemen from Hood River,
Parkdale and the forest service
joined in fighting the blaze.
Tne 'railroad estimated dam
age to the flat car at $250. Cause
of the glaze was not known.
Generally zoologists are of
the opinion that seals and
whales as mammals descended
from some earlier land animals.
The first mammals they say,
were descended from land-liv
ing reptiles whose own ancient
ancestors, probably came from
the sea. Some experts on mam
mal development think that
whales developed from ancient
hoofed animals.

Egyptians Jailed
In Cairo Raids

police arrested two former pre
miers and 11 other Egyptians to
day in swift pre-dawn raids on
homes of officials of ex-King
Farouk's monarchy. ,
Authorities announced that 10
had been jailed and three placed
under house arrest.
The government gave no im
mediate explanation for the ar
rests, but spokesmen for Presi
dent Mohammed Naguib warned
late last week that anti-government
plotters would be brought
to trial.
Most prominent of the arrested
Egyptians were former Premiers
Mustafa El Nahas and Ibrahim
Abdel Hadi and Former Cabinet
chief Hafez Af ifL
Nahas, 74, his wife, and Afifi
were placed under house arrest,
but the others were roused from
their sleep and taken to jail in
trucks.
Oregon Forest Fire
Danger 'Serious'

"Serious" forest fire danger
exists in Oregon, the weather
bureau said today.
Low humidities, dry east
winds and the threat of thunder
storms combined to bring about
the serious danger which .the
weather bureau said, would be
partly aleviated by tomorrow.
Thunderstorms were expected
this afternoon or tonight, spread
ing northward over western and
central Oregon. The humidity in
interior western valleys and cen
tral Oregon ranged from 20 to
30 per cent, v
Winds are expected to shift
to the west and southwest and
the humidity increase about 10
per cent over western Oregon to
morrow. Temperature continued warm
Medford's 92 was high for the
state yesterday.
Crash Victims Tell
Of Fighting Sharks
New York (U.R) Two crew
members of a B29 weather plane
that crashed in the Atlantic
Ocean recounted today how they
fought off sharks with their bare
hands as they battled for sur
vival for 22 hours in heavy seas.
Sgt. Larry Graybill, 21, Lands-
downe, Pa., a radar scanner, and
Airman 2nd Class James Hender
son, 20, Flushing, Mich., arrived
here aboard the Home Lines
cruise ship Nassau with 13 other
survivors of the B29 and a rescue
plane that was forced to land
while searching for them.
Both Graybill and Henderson
wore bandages on their hands
and forearms, attesting to the
slashing attacks of sharks and
stings from Portugese men-of-
war.
