that bicycle accidents are killing
about 600 persons a year!
.The association said in an edi
torial, in the July ' issue of its
Journal that 70 per cent of the
victims are girls and boys be
tween 5 and 19 yean old,
Between the ages of 10 to 14
yean, the association found,
more girls were killed than boys.
"This indicates ; that young
girls, like young boys, are fre
quently too venturesome," the
editorial said- "There was, bow
ever, an appreciable number of
deaths even among . older cy
clists." Two-thirds of the bicycle acci
dents occurred between May and
October. Eighty per cent of the
deaths involved collision with a
motor vehicle, the article said.
The editorial appealed' to par
ents and the schools to teach
bicycle safety. It asked that driv
en be made more aware of the
danger to bicyclists.
