their yacht, were captured by
the Chinese Communists off
Hone Ron. So far. the State
Deoartment has not been able
to find out where they are being
held, much less obtain their
freedom.

The British Royal Navy report
ed the same day that the vessel
was seized by a Chinese gunboat
and towed to Lap Sap Met Island

their wheareabouts and efforts
to win their release, Peiping and
Moscow have maintained com
plete silence. Efforts on their be

by the American delegation to
the United Nations, all to no
avail. The Reds to date haven't
even acknowledged that they
hold the Americans.
The three Americans appar
ently have joined more than 30
other American civilians held in
Jail or under house arrest by the
Chinese Reds. About 70 addi
tional Americans are. In- China.
The Peiping Communist govern
ment has brushed aside many
inquries about their welfare.
Moscow has been uncooperative
when asked to intercede.
From time to time, rumors fil
ter into Hong Kong about the
alleged whereabouts and condi
tion of the trio But none of
these reports has been confirmed
by the State Department or the
British.
One rumor said Applegate was
taken ill on Shameen Island and
had been transferred to Chung-
shan university hospital.

The Magic Carpet on Wheels,
a display of rare books and
manuscripts, will open its show
ing at the old city park on West
Main tomorrow at 10 a. m.
The display, sponsored by the
publishers of the Book of Knowl
edge, will be in Medford Wednes
day and Thursday of this week.
The show will be open from 10
a- m. to 9 p. m. both days.
The display is keyed around
the 500th anniversary of the in
vention of moveable type by
Johann Gutenberg and contains
items designed to show the his
tory of writing and printing
from the early Babylonian days
to the present.
Designed to take the story of
the printed word into areas re
mote from large libraries and
museums the display is housed
in a trailer-museum.

The 42-year-old farmer had
completed stacking his hay and
was leaning against the bales
when -a copperhead snake bit
him near the elbow. Opening
the bale, it was found the snake
had only six inches of body, the
rest having been severed by the
mowing machine.
The part-snake was killed and
Zimmerman recovered.
