Baptist Youth Choir Closes
Series of Summer Programs
Members of the youth choir of Medford First Baptist church
sang Friday night in Grants Pass, bringing to a close a series of
such programs given during the summer for other churches of the
area For the past three years the choir has provided music for
the evening service at the church, and this summer carried on the
added work of the outside programs.
Members of First Baptist,
church believe that this is the
first time such a program has
been carried on by a youth choir,
and point out that the musicians,
of high school and college age,
have faithfully rehearsed and
performed each week in spite of
the pressure of studies, athletic
activities and work.
The young people prepared an
hour of music and testimony en
titled "What think ye of Jesus"
and the program included choir
anthems, boys' quartet, girls'
trio, solos, instrumental numbers
and a chalk drawing. The theme,
telling what Christ can mean to
a young person in the world to
day, was enlarged by the use of
personal testimonies and well
loved gospel songs.
The program was enthusiastic
ally received by the Jacksonville
Village church, the Eagle Point
Community church, First Bap
tist church of Ashland, Selma
Baptist church and the Grants
Pass Youth for Christ, it is re
ported. This summer several former
choir members returned home
from school in time to assist with
the program. Misses Lois Zim
mers and Jean Jeldness, and
Don Chapman returned from the
Bible Institute of Los Angeles.
Don Chapman, studying for the
ministry, delivered his first ser
mon from the pulpit of his home
church August 2. Kenneth Bo
shears was home from Oregon
State college, and bis brother,
Gary, from Yale university.
The Boshears brothers are re
turning to their schools, and
Douglas Brannock is leaving
soon for Wheaton college. Miss
Phyllis Brannock, who will en
ter Southern Oregon college wis
fall as a ore-nursing student,
worked at Sacred Heart hospital
this summer and arranged her
hours in order to sing with the
girls' trio.
Song leader and bass soloist
for the eroun was Glen Lamb, a
graduate of the University of
Oregon who will be on the staff
of the Talent schools this fall.
The chalk artist was Miss Doris
Wagner. Jackson county nurse.
Pianist was Vance Tinseth, sen
ior high school student, and Miss
June Phillips, secretary of wasn
ington school, was organist.
Choir members were Phyllis
Brannock, Charlene. Paull,
Emily Gannaway, Barbara
Hobbs, Beth Fenton, Lois Zim
mers, Joyce Colvin, Betty Shaw,
Betty Adams, Jean Jeldness,
Ravma Stephens. Jeanne Wil
cox Jean Coppedge, Gayle

'The programs were given in
response to a vision of broader
service," a spokesman for the
group said, "and attainment of
the goal is another proof that
youth is willing to support, even
sacrifically, the worthwhile and
challenging affairs of life. It is a
rayof bright hope in a sometimes
gloomy world."

Mountain Climber
Wants To Aitempt
K-2 Second Time
Rawalpindi, Pakistan (U.R)
The leader of the unsuccessful
American attempt to climb
Mount Godwin Austen, (K-2),
world's second highest mountain,
said today he wants to challenge
it again.
"I'm sure K-2 can be climbed,"
Dr. Charles Houston of Concord,
Mass., said. "We hope to try
again next year."
The deeply sunburned doctor
sat beside his wife as he told of
the misadventures and death
which harassed his eight mem
ber expedition in the attempt to
scale the unconquered peak.
Gales and avalanches beat the
climbers back a short distance
from the top, and brought death
to Arthur K. Gilkey of New
York. A 10-foot stone cairn five
miles up the mountain marks the
spot where he died in an ava
lanche. "Only bad weather defeated
us this year," Houston said as he
rested here preparatory to leav
ing for the United States with
surviving members of the expedition.

Tu Major Strikes Ended
The nation's labor picture
brightened today as two major
strikes, involving 78,000 work
ers, were settled.
Fifty three thousand CIO
Communications Workers began
returning to their Jobs in South
western Bell Telephone com
pany's exchanges and installa
tions in six states.
Another 25,000 production
employees, members of the CIO
Rubber Workers, reported back
to work at eight Firestone Rub
ber plants. Negotiations at
Cleveland produced a new con
tract yesterday which granted
workers an average five-cent
hourly pay boost and increasing
their average wage to $2.05 an
hour.
Long Distance Threat
The Firestone rubber strike
agreement affected workers in
Akron, Los Angeles, Des Moines,
Memphis, Fall River, Mass.,
Potistown, Pa., and Noblesville
and Newcastle in Indiana.
Meanwhile negotiators re
doubled efforts to head off a
threatened strike by the nation's
long distance telephone opera
tors, also members of the CWA,
against the American Telephone
and Telegraph Co. Violence
abated in an Indiana telephone
strike.
The agreement between the
communications workers and
Southwestern Bell resulted from
a marthon 13-hour' bargaining
session at St. Louis that wound
up at dawn today.
Will Boost Rates
A union spokesman said the
agreement was "generally satis
factory" to the union.
Details of an agreed wage in
crease were not released immed
iately but a Southwestern Bell
spokesman warned telephone
subscribers that it would result
in a boost in phone service rates.
The Southwestern Bell strike
started 12 days ago when work
era walked out in Missouri, Tex
as, Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkan
sas and parts of Illinois to en
force demands for a 7Vi cent
hourly pay raise.
