Tickets for the forum on flu
oridation of city water Monday
night will be available at the
Jackson County Chamber of
Commerce office tomorrow, it
was reported Saturday. A num
ber of tickets are still unsold.
The debate will be over the
relative merits of the use of flu
orine In city water for the pre
vention of tooth decay, prin
cipally in children. The gather
ing, one of the chamber's regu
lar forum meetings, has been
opened to the public because of

oridation in Medford.
Oregon Tidelands
Position Up To Board
Salem U.R) Attorney Gen
eral Robert Y. Thornton has
left it up to the Board of Con
trol whether he should join with
five other states in testing the
constitutionality of the so-called
tidelands oil bill enacted by the
83rd Congress.
The recent legislation would
transfer ownership of these tide-
lands actually a misnomer as it
affects the submerged lands, to
three miles out from the fed
eral government to the states.
The states of Alabama, Arkan
sas, Montana, Rhode Island and
West Virginia have brought the
test case in U. S. District court
for the District of Columbia to
determine the constitutionality
ol the bill.
Russia Offers Aid
To Iran, Reports Say

Russia has opened a campaign
to woo Iran from the United
States by offering it aid to meet
its urgent financial crisis, ac
cording to informed Iranian
sources.
It was reported that Soviet
Ambassador Anatolle Avereutiev
launched the campaign in a con
ference with Premier Fazollah
Zahedi.
At the same time, U.S. Ambas
sador Loy W. Henderson was in
conference with Shah Moham
med Reza Pahlevi, likewise, it
is understood, discussing the pos
sibility of immediate aid to the
Iranian government

Woman Faces
Murder Charge
Roseburg (U.R) Thirty-nlne-year-old
Eva Canfield Friday
faced second degree murder
charges in the shotgun slaying
of her husband.
Mrs. Canfield, who admitted
shooting her husband, Virgil
Harris Canfield, at their home
near Idlewild, 22 miles north of
here Wednesday, wept as she
heard Judge A. J. Geddcj read
the charges filed by District At
torney Robert Stults.
Date for preliminary hearing
will be set after Mrs. Canfield
has obtained counsel. An attor
ney will probably be appointed
by the court to handle the de
fense, since Mrs. Canfield has
advised the district attorney
that she has no funds to pay
attorney fees.
The 37-year-old Canfield died
Wednesday night at Douglas
Community hospital here, about
three hours after he was hit in
the stomach by the shotgun
blast.
. The little ruby-throated hum
mingbird summers in the United

Yucatan. Although his wings
measure Just over an inch in
length, he can beat them about
75 times a second and is able to
make a non-stop flight of some
500 miles across the Gulf of
Mexico.

Chest Medford Plan Leaders Endorse United Medford Crusade

The Greater Medford Commu
nity Chest and the Medford Plan
will cease operations next month,
giving way to the United Med
ford Crusade, it was announced
by the presidents of the two or
ganizations Saturday.
Paul Haviland, Community
Chest president, said: t
"As president of the Greater
Medford Community Chest, I
wish to announce that the chest
will definitely close its business
as of Sept 30, 1953, giving place
to the United Medford Crusade,
which in addition to the agencies
represented in the Chest will
also serve as many of the na
tional agencies as may care to
join. .
"For the agencies and for the
board of directors of the chest, I
heartily endorse the United Med
ford Crusade, and ask that resi
dents give it their unqualified
support."
Frank N. Bash, president of
the MeHford Plan, stated::
. "The United Medford Crusade
will replace both the Medford
Plan and the Community Chest,
stcrting with the campaign this
fall. The United Medford Cru
sade has all of the advantages of
the, Medford Plan, and in addi
tion, consolidates under one
drive money-raising campaigns
that were not under the Commu
nity Chest. ,
"As president of the Medford
Plan this past year, and as a
director of the United Medford
Crusade, I urge all members of
the Medford Plan to join the
United Medford Crusade when
they are called upon. Firms and
individuals who have not been
members of the Medford Plan
will find that the United Med

The anti - Communist League
of Free Jurists, which received
the report, said that the hungry
Germans rebelled when squads
