shortages, there is enough gam
ma globulin for mass immuniza
tion of children in polio epi
demic areas and the time to use
it is now, the United Press, learn
ed today on high authority.
Of approximately 4,500,000
cubic centimeters of gamma
globulin allotted by the Office
of Defense Mobilization for mass
Immunizations, a p p r oximately
1,100,000 cub centimeters have
been used so far.
The remainder, enough to give
immunity to 425,000 children
under 10 for up to five weeks,
Is held by the ODM for alloca
tion to areas where" the total
number of polio cases passes a
critical level. That level at pres
ent is 200 cases for 100,000 pop
ulation. Season at Peak
It should be used soon because
this week, next week, or the
week after may bring the peak
of the 1953 polio season. Many
counties now are at or near the
critical level and more probably
will exceed it in the next few
weeks.

On the basis of the statistical
records of previous years, the
polio season reaches Its peak
usually in the last week of
Auugust, or the first two weeks
of September. Thereafter, the
case loads taper off although
there may be as many or more
cases after the peak as before it.

The extent of wounds and in
juries suffered by Marine Pfc.
Leonard Steege, released Med
ford prisoner of war, was report
ed here today in a letter from
the Marine Corps commandant,
Washington, D.C.
The letter was sent to the
young Marine's mother, Mrs. A.
H. Webster, 401 East 12th st.
Mrs. Webster is now in Cali
fornia to meet her son when he
arrives there.
The letter stated that Private
Steege is suffering from a frac
tured left arm and wounds to his
right elbow and left knee. Any
nerve or arterial involvement is
still unknown, the letter said.
It added that Private Steege is
receiving the best possible medi
cal treatment, and that any addi
tional information, including ex
pected time of arrival in the
United States, will be forwarded
immediately to Mrs. Webster and
her husband.
These figures were shown to
Dr. Kenneth Landauer, assistant
medical director of the National
Foundation for Infantile Paraly
sis. He said they were correct.
And he pointed out why gamma
globulin should be used for mass
immunizations in epidemic areas
and should not be used on "cas
ual contacts" In non-epidemic
areas.
The basic reason is that there
is not enough gamma globulin
to inject into the some 40 mil
lion children In the United
States, the most susceptible por
tion of the total population.
Therefore, the limited supply
has to be used where it will do
the most good in preventing
polio.
Considerable Risk
In epidemic areas, there is a
great deal of virus in circula
tion. All the children In those
areas run a considerable risk of
having the virus invade their
bodies. But when they are in
jected with gamma globulin,
they have a high degree of im
munity when they are invaded.

Much has been said about live
versus filmed TV shows, but one
thing that's usually forgotten is
that there are several different
ways of filming shows . . . and the
technique makes a lot of difference.
The usual
method employs
only one cam
era. "D rig
net, "Life of
Riley," "My
Little Margie,"
and many ether
filmed shows
use this
method. Indivi
dual scenes are shot and pieced to
gether, likr a movie. The second
method is a multiple camera with
audience system. The Grout ho
Marx show. "I Love Lucy," "Our
Miss Brooks" and others use this
technique. It has the advantage
of live audience reaction. A third
method is used for some of the
new Jack Benny shows, the Joan
Davis show, "Burns and Allen,"
and others. It uses three cameras
with no audience, allowing more
freedom in shooting. Often laugh
ter is dubbed in on these shows, or
the film is shown to an audience
and its reaction is recorded.
So when you start arguing about
live and filmed TV shows, you
really have to state what kind of
filmed show you mean! One thing
is sure ... If the show is good,
the audience will like it no matter
how it's made. The quality of the
show is what counts in the end.
But if your set isn't giving you a
quality picture, you're not getting
what you paid for. So make need
ed repairs promptly, and be sure

near here, decided to clock the
speed of an airplane flying over
head. Gowdy discovered, to his
sorrow, the plane was a highway

Rogue valley orchard ' men
were warned today that some
brown rot Is showing up in local
peaches.
. The situation is not believed
to be serious, county agents
state, adding that ' preventive
measures should be taken at this
time to prevent spread of rot
Brown rot, which thrives on
damp weather, effects peach,
plum and prune crops. Orchards
should start spray or dusting pro
grams with sulfur immediately
to guard against the fungus.
County agents recommend ap
plications of dust or spray at
five-day . Intervals during the
present damp weather and state
that they should be continued
through picking until all fruit is
harvested. The fruit should have
a protective covering of sulfur
when picked.
Dusting sulfur should be used
at the rate of 60 pounds to the
acre. Spray should be six pounds
of wettable sulfur to 100 gallons
of water.
Union President
Indicted for Perjury
Washington U.R) Atty. Gen.
Herbert Brownell Jr. announced
today that a federal Grand Jury
here has indicted Ben Gold,
president of the Fur and Leather
Workers Union, on charges of
swearing falsely that he was not
a Communist.
A federal court warrant has
been issued for Gold's arrest
the Justice Department said,
and he will be held in $10,000
bond when picked up.
The three-count indictment
charges that Gold on or about
Aug. 30, 1950, filed a non-Communist
affidavit with the Na
tional Labor Relations Board
here in which he "falaelv stated
that he was not than and there
a member of the Communist
party."
