statewide argument: Yes, elec
trical or mechanical turn signals
on passenger cars are legal in
Oregon.
The secretary of state's office
said such signals may be used
in lieu of hand and arm signals
and said It was emphasizing the
fact at this time in an attempt
to quell rumors that use of elec
trical turn signals was contrary
to Oregon law.
The law provides that either
mechanical or electrical turn
signals must be of a type which
has been approved by the secre
tary of state. If your signaling
device has been installed by the
manufacturer of your car you
can be sure it has been approv
ed. If it was installed by some
dealer or retailer it probably is
approved, but if you have any
doubt about yours, you can
check with Don Neave of the
motor vehicle department in Salem.

or load prevents hand signals
from being seen by approaching
drivers must be equipped with
turn signals. A signal, either by
hand or by an approved mechan
ical or electrical device, must be
given whenever the operation of
any other vehicle may be affect
ed by the turn.

Memorial Benches
Due at Vets' Cemetery
Camp White Four memorial
benches will soon be placed in
the veterans cemetery above
Eagle Point under terms of a
donation from the Veterans of
Foreign Wars, department of
Washington, and special inscrip
tion plates are being made.
The benches are to be in mem
ory of Johny Walker Jones and
will be constructed of concrete
with oak seats by the Domi
ciliary engineering division. Jones
was instrumental, as VFW hos
pital representative, in bringing
to the attention of congress the
desirability of Camp White as a
VA domiciliary center at the
time when it was listed to be
disposed of as a government res
ervation.

Changes Explained
Camp White Changes in the
classification of civil service po
sitions here were explained this
week to personnel at Camp
White who will be affected by
the new order as it applies to
the Veterans Administration.
In conferences with supervi
sors, H. J. Heitkemper, person
nel officer, emphasized the ad
vantages of the authority which
has just been granted field exec
utives to work out job classifi
cations. The program was set in
motion at a recent meeting of
personnel off ers in Seattle.
The plan "aids rather than
hinders promotional processes"
in government service, it was
pointed out.
"A good duties classification
provides the only workable ba
sis for defin'- career avenues,
for preparh. training courses
designed to equip employees for
higher assignments, for identify
ing misplaced employees with po
sitions for which they are better
qualified and for determining
where in the service are found
the sources of personnel for fill
ing positions of a given type, it
was explained.

Examinations for substitute
post office clerks in various
cities, for corrective therapists,
and for aeronautical engineers,
have been announced by the U.
S. Civil Service Commission.
The engineering jobs pay $3,-
410 to $5,060 and are at the Air

therapist positions pay $3,410 to
$3,060, and the post office clerks
receive $1.61 V4 per hour

"leg" on the plaque awarded by
the Veterans Canteen service for
outstanding performance among
VA canteens in 14 western states
has been won by Camp White,
Manager E. K. Ricker announced
Thursday afternoon.
A citation setting forth the
basis of the award was read to
station personnel by Manager
Ricker in the canteen . where
the presentation was made to
Clarence J. Bryan, manager of
the service. The plaque is award
ed semi-annually to the best run
store and coffee shop. It will be
kept permanently if won a third
time-

would arrive Sept. 8 on the
Gripsholm, the ship on which he
