Northwest Residents Mopping Up
After Heavy Rain, Freak Tornado

Pacific Northwest' residents
were mopping up today after a
aeries of aqualla dumped heavy
rains throughout much of the
area and an accompanying freak
tornado swept through twof arms
near Ridgefleld, Wash.
. Portland was bard hit by the
rain, with more than 100 re
ports received by the city en
gineer of flooded basements.
The deluge also flooded city
streets when sewers were unable
to handle the runoff.
Chicken House Moved
The freak tornado near Ridge
fleld, about 17 miles north of
Vancouver, moved a chicken
house its full width, tearing out
trees and leveling a corn field.
' The unusual storm hit the
farm of Don Wells, 2 miles south
east of Ridgefleld, about 4:30
p.m. Wells said his chicken house
was moved from its foundation
and its roof torn off. A walnut
tree was torn out by the roots
and a prune tree was carried
more than 130 yards from an
orchard to a nearby field
Chimney Destroyed
The chimney of a neighboring
farmhouse was destroyed.
No one was reported Injured.

Now Are Available
For Farmer Loans
A new allotment of federal
funds for farm housing loans in
Jackson and Josephine counties
was announced this week by
William N. Young Jr, supervisor
of the Farmers Home Admin
istration at Grants Pass.
Purpose of the credit is to
finance homes and farm build
ings for farm families. Veterans
receive preference.
The loans bear 4 per cent in
terest and are repayable over
periods up to 33 years. In the last
three years, 22 families in the
two county area, have bor
rowed approximately $133,308
to improve Inadequate buildings.
Farmers Only
Since the demand for these
loans far exceeds the limited
loan funds, Young explained,
only farm owners receiving all
or a substantial portion of their
Income from the sale of farm
commodities may qualify as
borrowers. A loan may be made
to improve a farm on which the
operator works off the farm only
If he or members of his family
re farming on a sizable scale.
These loans may not be used to
construct rural residences or
other buildings for families not
generally recognized as fanners.
An FHA committee in each
county, composed of local farm-
era, decides who is eligible. Jo-

Jacksonville
Has Four Councilmen
Jacksonville The city of
Jacksonville still has a complete
team of four city councilmen to
day.
It had been reported yesterday
that all members of the council
might resign in a body at a spec
ial meeting last night. The re
port followed a city election at
which Jacksonville voters turn
ed down a proposed new city
charter by a vote of 91 to 69.
Councilman Loyd Whitney
said this morning that the pro
posed new charter may be re
vised and presented to the vot
ers again at a later date. He in
dicated that this might be done
at the next general election in
November, 1994.
More In Line
Any. revision of the charter
would be aimed at bringing the
document more in line with
what the voters apparently
want, Whitney said.
The report that the' council
men would resign at last night's
meeting came after only 136 vot
ers out of the more than 1,000
registered to cast ballots took
part in the special election.
Members of the council made no
secret of their dissatisfaction

Man Reports Flames
Destroyed His Home
Acey Martin,route 1, box 404
(Mud Springs rd.), reported that
his two room frame house burn
ed to the ground yesterday.
He said the' fire occurred
about 9 a.m. and apparently was
caused by a spark from the
flue. Martin reported that he
lost a considerable amount of
personal belongings.
He stated that he has obtained
a tent as temporary quarters
and will rebuild on the site. A
previous residence on the prop
erty burned about 30 years ago,
Martin said.

Plans Told; Year's
Teachers Listed

meetings will be held on Septem
ber 3 and 4 at the Sams Valley
school. Teachers for the 1933-94
year are Mildred Mack, first and
second grades; Susan Ambrose,
third and fourth grades; Roland
Smith, a new member of the
teaching staff, fifth and sixth
grades; and Gilbert Mack, prin
cipal and seventh and eighth
grades.

noon time lunches starting that
day. Prices are , 29 cents per
lunch for children and 3ft cents
for adults- Parents are urged to
send in weekly lunch money on
Mondays whenever possible.

Ashland Post Office
Construction Starts
Ashland Preliminary work
on a new Ashland post office
started this week. It will be on
the site of the old Ashland Ma
chine shop building on North
Second st.
A crew is now taking down
the old structure, but heavy
wooden trusses which are part
of the old building will be used
in the new. Work on new foun
dations will be started within a
week, according to Dom Pro
vost, St-, who is supervising con
struction. The new building, to be leas
ed by the Post Office depart
ment, will have 5,000 square
feet of interior space, and a load
ing dock. Plans have been ap
proved by the government. Com
pletion is scheduled before next
March.

Cutter Balsam To
Be Based at Eureka

Guard Cutter Balsam, hero of
scores of sea rescues in the Pa
cific Northwest, was en route
to Eureka, Calif., today where
it will be based.
Replacing the Balsam at As
toria will be ,the Sea-goin tug
Locona- Lt Cmdr. Robert O
Bracken said the addition of the
powerful tug to the sea rescue
units at Astoria would be a val
uable aid to heavy shipping in
trouble off the coast.
"When we get to the rescue
scene now we'll have enough
power to take effective action,"
Bracken said.
The Locona Is expected to ar
rive in Astoria about Sept. 3.

properties totaling 0,878 acres
were certified as Wast Coast
tree farms by the Industrial
Forestry Association at a meet
ing of the board of directors

Six of the new tree farms are
in Washington and eight in Ore
gon, according to R. F. Morse of
Longvlew, Wash., chairman of

The list includes four tree
farms certified in Josephine
county which are the first whol
ly within the county and in
clude the first farm-owned for

the recognition.
The new farms raise to 4,
200,000 acre land now certified,
Morse said. Washington leads
with 2,800,000 acres west of the
Cascades. Oregon has 1,600,000
