Newbry Plans To Renew Plea for
Use of Uniform License Plates

for agreement on a uniform li
cense plate for all states will be
made by Oregon Secretary of
State Earl T. Newbry at a con
ference of the American Associa
tion of Motor Vehicle Adminis
trators at Richmond, Va., in Oc
tober. This will be the second time
that Newbry has urged the sev
eral states to get together on a
uniform plate as a means of sav
ing public funds.
Proposal Has Support
Recent approval of a 36 per
cent increase in parcel post rates
effective Oct 1 will lend sup
port to the proposal, Newbry
said.
Automobile manufacturers
have assured the states that
once a uniform plate is adopted
motor vehicles will be manu
factured with provision made for
a permanent and protected li
cense plate holder. Newbry said
such a receptacle for' license
plates would result in saving
hundreds of thousands of dollars
each year in plate material.
The necessity of replacing li
cense plates either annually or,
as in Oregon, every five years,
calls for a considerable expendi
ture. The 1953 Oregon Legisla
ture, anticipating the remanu
facture of license plates in 1995,
appropriated $425,000 for this
purpose. Newbry said if the
state did not have to spend
such large quantities on new
plates, this money could be
spent on the highways.
Two Weights Usad
At present two weights of li
cense plates are distributed in
Oregon. The lighter is mailed for
eight cents a pair. The heav
ier requires a parcel post rate

some $1800 a year.
To Seek Lighter Plates
Newbry. has directed a study
to be made to see if the heavier
plate in Oregon can be reduced
by one or two ounces to cushion
the postage increase. The Oregon
Legislature in 1945 placed dis
cretion for the size and ahape of
the license plates with the secre
tary of state, so Oregon is in a
position immediately to adopt a
uniform plate should other states
be willing to give up the present
odd sizes, slogans and illustrations.
Gold Hill School
Opening Slated
For September 14
Gold Hill Gold Hill element
ary school will open on Monday,
September 14, according to an
announcement by Robert Sage,
principal. Mr. Sage said buses
will run on the same schedule
as last year, and the cafeteria
will be serving lunch on the
first 'day of school.
Teachers will report on Sep
tember 3 for organizational meet
ings. Three new teachers have
been elected for the coming
year. Mrs. Barbara Tonner, of
Washington, and Miss Mary
Klocker, of Ohio, will be 'the
new first grade teachers, and
Mrs. Gertrude Jacobsen, of Iowa
will have the seventh and eighth
grades.
Other teachers will be Mrs.
Marie Brannock, second grade;
Mrs. Ida von Buskirk, third
grade; Mrs. Elizabeth West,
fourth grade; Mr. D. Roberts,
fifth grade; Mrs. Grace Brown-
lee, sixth grade, and Mr. William
Hall, eighth grade. Mrs. Margue
rite Black will teach Home Mak
ing, Physical Education, and
handle the library. Mrs. Paul
Throne and Mrs. Lottie Frost
will again handle the cafeteria,
and Joe Morgan, Paul Throne
and Cecil Gaby will drive the
buses. Lester Thompson will
serve again as custodian.
Douglas County To
Get Housing Project

Housing Commissioner Charles
E. Slusser said that the hous
ing authority of Douglas county
is one of a limited number of
local authorities which will be
permitted to place new low-rent
homes under construction this
fiscal year.
Slusser said the construction
approved for the Douglas county
authority would consist of rural,
non-farm housing at Reedsport
Congress this year limited to
20,000 the new public housing
units to be started before June
30, 1954.
Rueh-Sterling School
Opening September 8
Ruch-Sterling school will open
Sept. 8, rather than Sept. 1, as
previously announced.
The first day of classes will
be a full day and the cafeteria
will be in operation. Buses will
run on last year's schedule.

Mailbox Vandalism

Hamilton today requested co
operation from parents in the
stopping of mail box vandalism
throughout the city.
Children in several areas, par
ticularly on the west side, have
caused serious damage to mail
boxes and mail, Hamilton said.
Several reports of such damage
have come from the area of
Orchard Home drive, Spring st.,
and Chestnut st.
Four such instances have been
reported in the past week, the
postmaster said. In the most re
cent, mail including a letter
from a soldier in Korea and sev
eral checks was taken from a
mail box, torn up and thrown
away, Hamilton said.
Tampering with mail is a fed
eral offense. The postmaster
stated that, in all cases, the of
fenders are believed to be young
sters who do not realize the im
portance of the damage which
they have been doing.
Soap Box Derby Entry
Termed 'Outstanding'
By Companion on Trip
Southern Oregon "had one of
the outstanding representatives"
at the National Soap Box Derby
in .Akron Ohio, according to
Jerry Jerome, who accompanied
young Chuck Mansfield, Grants
Pass, to the big event.
The Grants Pass youngster
qualified for the national derby
by winning the second' annual
Rogue Valley Soap Box Derby,
held in Medford under the spon
sorship of Barnes Chevrolet, the
Kiwanis club and The Mail Trib
une.
Although the Rogue valley en
trant did not bring home any of
the top prizes, he fared well in
the national derby. His time in
the qualifying races was two
seconds better than that turned
in by the final winner.
Had Prominent Part
. In addition, the youth played
a prominent part in the derby
festivities. He was one of 10
youngsters selected to attend a
Kiwanis derby luncheon.
Akron "really went all out"
for the derby entrants, accord
ing to Jerome. He reported that
the entire city was gaily dec
orated for the event, and that
Akron citizens went out of their
way to make the boys feel at
home and to give them a good
time.

Two Men Arraigned
On Car Theft Charge
Thomas Junior Harris, 29, Port
Orford, Tex., and Roy Lester
Tippery, 28, a transient, have
been arraigned in district court
on a charge of larceny of a mo
tor vehicle. Bond has been set
at $3,500 on each man and both
have been lodged in the county
jail. ,
The two men were arrested
Saturday afternoon at Grants
Pass. When picked up they were
sitting in a pickup truck which
had been taken from Witham
Parts and Equipment company,
324 East Fifth St., Medford.

youngster was introduced as win
ner of the Medford derby, and
received a banner and a hat
marked "Medford, Oregon." In
addition, his car carried a re
plica of the name plate of The

experience for the Grants Pass
youngster, according to Jerome,
who pointed out that the boy
was named one of the outstand
ing youths at the derby camp,
Jerome expressed the hope that
the Rogue valley will see fit to
continue to conduct the Rogue
Valley Soap Box Derby as an
annual affair,
Jerome and young Mansfield
made the trip to Akron by plane.
It was the youngster's first long
trip away from the Rogue val
ley. They made the return trip
by automobile,
Coroner Applicants
Bid by Committee
Persons interested in being
named county coroner, to suc
ceed Dr. M. P. Vogel, who re
signed yesterday, should get in
touch with the Jackson County
Republican Central committee,
according to C. O. Lovejoy, act
ing chairman.
Lnveinv said the committee
will make a recommendation for
the position to the county court,
which will make the appoint
ment The committee would like
to. hear from anyone who is
qualified and who would like
to apply for the appointment.
It is hoped to make the recom
mendation within the next day
or two, Lovejoy added.
TO GRAND JURY
Chester Junior Reid. 29, of
72 Garfield st, Ashland, has
been bound over to the Jackson
county grand jury on a charge
of non-support, according to dis
trict court officials. . Bail has
been set at $1,500.

county apparently will not have
the chance to acquire Blue Lake
park east of Portland.
Owner N. B. Welch told com
missioners he would proceed
with plans for erecting 100 lake
shore homes and developing
1,000,000 country club at the
park.
The meeting between Welch
and the commissioners was
prompted by a "Save Blue Lake
Park" committee that recom
mended the county buy the prop
erty to preserve it as a public
park.
