N. Y. said Saturday the Russian H-bomb test of
August 12 produced an explosion "of most respec
table proportions.'
It certainly was "more than Just an atomic
explosion." Cole said.
Cole is chairman of the House-Senate Atomic
Energy committee. He and three other committee
members in town were "informed fully" of the
Soviet weapon at a secret briefing late Friday
by two officials of the Central Intelligence
Agency.
Reassuring Statement
Immediately after the meeting, at which the
congressmen were told how U. S. intelligence
detected the Russian super-bomb blast, Cole is
sued a statement designed to reassure the Ameri
can people and their allies.

A majority of pear growers of
the Rogue River valley approve
of the anti-hail program con
ducted by the Rogue River Val
ley Traffic association-, it was re
ported Saturday.
Results of a poll taken among
the valley's growers earlier this
year have been released by the
Jackson County Fruit Growers
League. They show that of the
87 growers who answered the
poll, 98 gave an unquilified
"yes" to the question, "Do you
approve of the cloud -seeding
anti-hail program?'
There were 19 unqualified
"noes."
The other 10 growers qualified
their "yes" answers by sugges
tions about the program. Some
of them approved so strongly
they want it expanded; others
felt there should be changes in
the manner in which it is op
erated. 40 Per Cent Respond
Questionnaires were sent to
220 growers, and the 87 who re
sponded equalled 40 per cent.
These included 7 who have up
to 5 acres; 18 who have between
8 and 10 acres; 13 who have 10
to 20 acres; 20 who have 20 to 40
acres; 18 who have 40 to 100
acres; 9 who have 100 to 300
acres, and 4 who have more than
800 acres-

But in a talk with the United Press later. Cole
made it plain that the Soviet hydrogen weapon
is not something to belittle.
Detected Quickly
The United States detected the Soviet test
within a few hours after it happened. Subsequent
analysis proved that it involved both fission A
bomb and thermonuclear (H-bomb) reactions.
That meant that, the Russians exploded hy
drogen "device" with an A-bomb trigger.
Although the CIA -told him, Cole refused to
pass on any details of the size of the explosion
except to tell 4 reporter that:
" Thermonuclear' in and of itself carries the
implication that it was an explosica of most re
spectable proportions. It certainly was mora than

them not to expect federal price
supports unless production was
