Eyes Season
On Gridiron
Medford'a Cheney Stud con
clude their baseball season this
week and.
The Studs play host at the
fairgrounds here to the tough
Coos Bay-North Bend Lumber-
. jacks. Games are at 8 p.m. Sat
urday and 2 p.m. Sunday. It's
been a rather dreary season for
the Studs and they'll be out to
. wind-up the year on a happy
note.
Medford had a Southwestern
Oregon League make-up series
set for next week end with Co
quille here. However, Business
Manager Tom MacLeod an-
' nounced that the games have
been cancelled. He contacted Co-
quille last night. The Loggers are
disbanding for the year after
this week end.
Ho Bearing
Games missed with Coquille
were in the first half and had no
bearing on the league diadem.
The same is true of a pair of
scuffles missed with Bandon,
They, too, will not be made up.
As the Studs face the Lumber-
lack series, they are in the cel
lar. Their week end aim will be
to hop out of the lowly spot
But, the highest they can go is
sixth in the second half stand
ings. Medford finished sixth in
the first half.
The Lumberjacks will bring a
strong crew to Medford. Coos
Bay-North Bend beat the Studs
in both the first half combats.
However, Medford generally is
fired up for the Jacks and is
rated a good chance of gaining
victory.
The bay nine has a strong
pitching staff in Dick Bishop,
Ward Rockey, Jay Ragni and
Stan Blank. Ragni passed by a
Western International loop as
signment this summer to join
the Lumberjacks. Rockey head
ed the staff at last report with
a record of four wins and no
losses. Bishop had a three-three
record, Ragni a two-one mark
and Blank stood at one-two. It
is not known here who will get
the starting mound assignments
for the Jacks this week.
Dunn Played Here
Coos Bay has Joe Sugura, .387
hitter, as catcher. At first base
is the old vet. Buz Arlitt, who
often comes through with timely
hits. Al Cohen is second base
man. Shortstop is Roy Nicely,
.388 swatter, who covers a lot
of territory at his post. Man
ager Curley Leininger is third
baseman.
Dick Wenner, Jack Dunn and
Johnny Kovenz, .417 walloper,
are probably starting outfielders.
Dunn has been seen in action
here before. In 1949 he was a
player for the Medford Nuggets
professional nine.
Probable opening pitchers for
Medford for the final games are
Elliott Fagan and Paul Gehr-
man, with Clarence Mellbye and
Terry Maddoz available for re
lief.
The infield will be picked
from among Jack Cooney, Dick
James, Jim Sinovic .and Don
Fawcett and the outfield from
among Maddox, Snuffy Smith,
Moose Blevins, Earl O NeiL raw-
cett and Paul Martin. t

left him considerably off the
pace when he finally got back
into the lineup. Now he is just
as hot as the Oaks are cold.
Hollywood crushed Oakland
7-3 last night despite the brace
of homers that Marshall con
tributed. The blows ran .his
streak to three in two days. He
slammed one against Mel Queen
on Wednesday afternoon with
the bases loaded.
The triumph left the Stars
comfortable 10 games ahead of
Seattle, which downed Portland.
Heard Bounced
The Rainiers grabbed an early
lead and went on to defeat the
Beavers 6-1 behind effective 10-
hit pitching by Vera Kinds-
father.
The Rainiers collected only
eight hits off Jay Heard and Red
Adams but bunched five of them
in the first two innings.
Heard lasted only two innings.
During that time, Seattle reach
ed him for five runs, four of
them earned.
Two of them came in the first
inning on a double by Alex Gar-
bowski, Clarence Maddern's sin
gle, an error and a run-scoring
infield out.
Seattle scored three runs in
the second on a walk, Goldy
Goldsberry's double and singles
by Tobin and Leo Thomas.
Red Adams replaced Heard at
the end of the two innings.

that juiced the final score up to
9-5. It marked, the second time
this week that the bordertown
ers have rolled the Senators for
seven runs in one frame. It hap
pened before on Tuesday.
Lloyd Dickey proved that the
PCL is still a minor league by
uncorking five wild pitches in
the same inning for San Diego
and still earning his seventh win
of the year. Chesty Chet John
son was deflated for his 13th
reversal.
San Francisco scored two runs
in the 10th to down their Los
Angeles tormentors, 5-3. Elmer
Singleton, who was the third
pitcher to climb the hill for
Tommy Heath, came on in the
ninth to get his 14th win. Nini
Tornay singled in two runs off
Randy Gumpert in that frame
after Bud Hardin fumbled Leo
Righetti's grounder to filj up the
oases.
Coach Eldon Durham will
mold bis 1953 St Mary's high
school football eleven with
squad of some 10 lettermen and
a big fullback transfer from
California.
He reported that practices
tentatively are scheduled to start
on August 31. The Crusaders
will play a schedule of at least
five games in the Jackson Coun
ty Class B League. Durham Is
hoping to arrange another game
on September n.
The transfer candidate is Jim
Jones, 218 pounder from St. Vin
cent's high of San Diego. He is
listed as fast for his size and as
a fair passer.
Better Situation
Lettermen backfield men ex
pected to return are speedy Stan
Read, Tim Dugan, Laval Meu-
nier and Dick Paup. Anticipated
returnees who lettered in the
lines are Jim Link, a 195-pound-
er, Ramon Elberts, Joe Hassler,
Joe Lucas, Laddie Zwanz and
Tom York. Durham said that the
line should be heavy but not too
fast.
The grid situation appears to
be in better shape than last year
when the Crusaders made the
swing back into 11-man compe
tition after a number of years of
six-man football. Last year St.
Mary's wound up the season
with a squad of 12 men. This
season Durham is looking for
ward to a squad of 18 to 23 boys.

Wrigley, owner of the next to

day he will wait until the end of
the season before making any
decision on whether to keep Phil
Cavaretta as manager.
Wrigley said he wants to "sit
down and have a little chat"!
with the field boss of the Cubs.
"I'd like to let things cool off
a little," Wrigley said. 'Every
body's quite excited right now'
and I don't think that the time !
for contract signing is here yet."
Hack Mentioned
There have been consistent
rumors that Cavarretta, who
guided the Cubs to a fifth place
finish last year, will be replaced
by Stan Hack, former Cub third
baseman and currently manager
of Los Angeles in the Pacific
Coast league.
Wrigley refused to confirm or
deny the rumors. He also has
been consistently evasive about
voicing any vote of confidence
in Cavaretta.
