Accused Pair Denies
Race Betting Racket

bands, one from California and
the other from Florida, were
charged today with bilking a
Hollywood. Fla., building con
tractor of $8,765 in a horse race
betting racket
Wilbur W. Scaggs, 36. San
Ysidro. Calif., and Donald Gig-
son, 24, Hollywood. Fla, were
seized last night at their hotel.
In a warrant issued in Florida
on July 15, electrical contractor
Thomas, Paoli, Hollywood,
charged that they took his money,
promising to bet it on horses.
but never paid him back on
winners.
Scaggs and Gibson denied the
charges at their arraignment to
day. They said they borrowed
money from Palli but as as much
as he listed. The men were re
leased on $5,000 bond.

One Dead, Two Hurt
In Mountain Feud
Fraser, Colo. U.R) One man
was killed and two wounded
yesterday in a blazing barroom
gun battle in this Colorado
mountain town, one of President
Eisenhower's favorite vacation
spots.
Charles Dunlap, 50, was being
held under police guard in a
hospital at nearby Kremmling,
Colo., after a 53-year-old Fraser
druggist, Ray Fox, was shot to
death in the gunfight.
The dead man's brother,
George Fox, 52, suffered gun
shot wounds in the back and
shoulder, while Dunlap also
was wounded in the shoulder.
Neither of the latter was in seri
ous condition, authorities re
ported.
Sheriff Chancey Van Pelt,
two-gun sheriff of Grand county
who earlier this year shot to
death two bandits after they had
kidnaped him, said the shooting
was the result of a long stand
ing feud between the Fox broth
ers and Dunlap. "
Two Stolen Vehicles
Found, Police Say
The second and third of three
vehicles stolen in Jackson coun
ty Tuesday night have been re
covered, state police stated this
morning.
A pickup truck belonging to
Clara P. Singmaster, Ashland,
was found abandoned in Klam
ath Falls, and a Willys Jeepster,
stolen from the Sam Mete com
pany, Medford, was found In
Ashland, officers reported.
The third car, a sedan stolen
from Wilson's Used Car and
Trailer Exchange, Phoenix, was
found Wednesday morning.

Service Interrupted As
Wage Drive Mounts

today and one picket was arrest
ed at Kansas City as the CIO
Communications Workers step
ped up its drive to win wage
boosts from the nation's tele
phone companies.
At. St. Louis, federal concilia
tors called a meeting for Mon
day to try to end the strike by
53,000 CWA members against
Southwestern Bell Telephone
company in six states.
Picketing generally was peace
ful against the Southwestern
and Indiana Bell Telephone com
panies today except for a single
incident at Kansas City.
At Chicago, 2,000 employees
of the American Telephone and
Telegraph Co. walked off their
jobs "to attend a meeting" and
virtually all long distance serv
ice was interrupted.
John J. Riley, 28-year-old
picket, was arrested and releas
ed under $100 bond at Kansas
City after he allegedly threw
two milk bottles against a tele
phone company building. Union
officials said Riley acted on his
own volition.
Violence subsided in the In
diana telephone strike where
many exchange buildings have
been under a state of virtual
siege by pickets with windows
smashed, gas bombs exploded
and cables slashed.
Indiana union members, en
tering the second month of their
strike, streamed through strike
headquarters at Indianapolis
where grocery and rent aid was
distributed. Some ate at a "strike
kitchen" set up by an Indianapo
lis packing house union local.
Union officials charged that
state officers planned to call out
the National Guard to use "bayo
nets on defenseless girl pickets."

Two members of the plane's
12-man crew were killed and
two others seriously injured
yesterday when the bomber
spun into the desert 40 miles
north of here and exploded.
The remaining eight airmen

The 10 survivors all parachut
ed from the plane when an en
gine caught fire on a routine
training flight from nearby Da-vis-Monthan
Air Force Base to
California.
It was the second B-50 crash
in Arizona within the past
month. Two B-50s collided in
the air near Phoenix July 17.
One of those planes crashed,
killing eight, while the other re
turned to Davis-Monthan with
slight damage.
The two dead airmen were
identified as Capt. Charles D.
Bostick, 34, Marion, S. C, and
S-Sgt Herbert Pemberton, 28,
