Battleship Tirpitz Raised

After an unprecedented hard
winter one of the world's most
peculiar salvage works was reJ
sumed here.
The salvage company, Hoevd
ing Skipsopphugging'AS, began
by bringing to the surface four
of the biggest guns from the
former German battleship Tir
pitz. The guns, each weighing
150 tons, had been buried in six
meters of mud on the bottom of
Tromsoe Fiord off the island
of Kvaloya (Whale Island)
By using a German floating
crane the only one in Scan
dinavia capable of taking up to
200 tons they were moved
to a rock-bottomed part of the
fjord, where they will remain
till it has been decided what to
do with them.
Sunk by RAF
The Tirpitz was sunk in the
fjord Nov. 12, 1944, by British
planes after an earlier attempt
by two British midget sub
marines in the Alta Fjord, far
ther north, had failed.
The huge battleship lay up
side down off Kvaloya for three
years, with its hull sticking 12
meters out of the water. It was
marked as a separate island on
Norwegian maps, and after the
war became a big attraction for
tourists who came to walk on
the bottom of former German
man-of-war.
In 1947 the hull was bought
by Hoevding Skipsopphugging
AS, and the work of salvage
began early in 1948, with the
assistance of German experts.
Twelve of the 32 men now work
ing on the hull are Germans, and
much of the equipment has been
brought from Hamburg.
So far 16,000 tons of steel
have been broken up and sold to
Norwegian iron works, to plants
in the Ruhr district, and to the
Swedish Bofors company, Elec
tric pumps, 60,000 meters of
electric cable and other equip-

hower Museum may eventually
be Abilene's biggest attraction
for the tourist trade. But it has
competition from Boot Hill.
A committee has gone to work
to restore Boot Hill, famed in
history and fiction as the burial
ground of gunmen who fell in
outlaw battles when. Abilene was
the northern terminal for Texas
cattle trails.

the memory of Wild Bill HIckok,
the early marshal of Abilene
who was credited with having
restored order to the Kansas
community.

as a tribute to the British pilots
who bombed and sank the ship.
The salvage company esti
mates that 40,000 tons of steel
plates ere still left, and they do
not expect work to be concluded
before 1956. Huge quantities of
ammunition still left in the
wreck have been a great prob
lem, although only minor mis
haps have occurred so far.
One of the most difficult op
erations was to bring the guns
to the surface. When the Tir
pitz sank the cannon towers were
flung deep into the mud. The
steel-plated towers were built to
withstand great explosions, and
the divers had much difficulty
in blowing them up to get the
guns free.
Serving as a lighter to bring
the scrap steel from the wreck to
nearby Tromsoe is another form
er man-of-war, the Norwegian
frigate Aalesund. . When salvage
operations are completed, the
Aalesund will be scrapped.
