Old Records Revealed
By 'Housecleaning'
Job at Courthouse
In order to get to the office
at the southern end of the court
house on the first floor, it is now
necessary to thread through a
corridor of boxes, old record
books, and some tall cans that
look suspiciously like garbage
containers.
Mrs. Bereth P. Hopkins, the
new Jackson county clerk, ex-
plained that the confusion is the
result of a mass housecleaning
taking place in the clerk' office.
Records and miscellaneous items
accumulated in the vault on the
first floor of the courthouse over
a period of year are being
either indexed and filed, or de
stroyed to make more room.
Get Legal Opinion
Mrs. Hopkins pointed out that
the office receives a legal opin
ion on every record before de
stroying it to be sure that noth
ing is thrown away that should
be kept. Items of possible histor
ical value- are referred to the
state archivist, David C. Duni
way, in Salem.
The tall cans stacked on one
side of the hall are the old ballot
boxes that have not been used
officially since 1934, Mrs. Hop
kins said. They have been re
placed by pouches, and, along
with some old light fixtures that
have been replaced, will be sent
to auction.

To Be Indexed
Exhibits used in old legal
case which, up to now, have
been identified by case number
only, will be put in chronologi
cal order and indexed. It re
quires a circuit court order be
fore they can be destroyed. The
office plans to initiate a perpet
ual inventory of supplies, Mrs.
Hopkins aid, and the policy will
be to do as much buying as pos
sible with local firms.
Pointing to a stack of maps on
the hall floor Mrs. Hopkins ex
plained that they were present
ed to the county by Mrs. T. W.
Miles. They were printed in
1910, she said, are completely
obsolete now, and will have to
be destroyed.
Old Record Book
Among the things discovered
In the course of cleaning out the
vault that Mrs. Hopkins consid
ered particularly interesting was
an old book containing a record
of the first marriage license is
sued in the county.
The license was to John C
fngleman and Elizabeth Winkle.
William Hoffman wa the re
corder. The license wa dated
1855. A photostatic copy has
been made of the book and the
original will be put away in the
safe. Records in the book con
tinue to 1863.
The first factory in the United
States devoted exclusively to the
manufacture of machinists' tools
was established in Nashua, N.H.
in 1838. John H. Gage set it up
at the Nashua Manufacturing
company.
