tend Beavers hammered 21 hits
to submerge the Seattle Rainiers
13-5 in the opener of their eight
game Pacific Coast league base
ball series last night.
Eight of the Beavers' hits,
compiled off four Seattle hurlers
were for extra bases. The Rain
iers managed one threatening
toning, the sixth, when they put
together five singles and chased
Royce Lint, Portland starter.
Lint, however, got credit for
the victory his 16th against 9
reverses.
Portland broke through for
two runs off Bill Evans in the
fourth.
Don Eggert led off with a
triple to center and tallied on
Eddie Basinski's double. Basin
ski moved up on an infield out
and scored on a fly ball by Lint,
rive in Sixth
Seattle got one back in - its
half of the fourth on a single
by Leo Thomas and a double
by Clarence Maddern.
In the Portland fifth,, doubles
by Hank Arft and Bob Marquis
and a single by Herm Reich
drove across two runs and chas

A two-run homer by Fletcher
Hobbe was the big blow for Port
land as the Beavers tallied five
runs in the sixth. The visitors'
last outburst came in the eighth
when they scored four runs on
three singles and two walks off
Tom Lovrich, fourth Seattle
hurler.
The Rainiers jostled Lint out
of the box with a four-run rally
in the sixth.

Dalles with 171 and Tom Weeg
of Milwaukie with 168 failed to
make the grade.

defeated the Grants Pass Lum
berjacks 12 to 3 in their inter
district softball play-off hassle
last night at Lakeview to square
the series. Grants Pass won 2 to
1 on Monday. The final fray of
the two-out-of-three series for a
state tourney berth will be at
Klamath Falls tonight.

will start his second year as pilot
of the Red Raider fortunes. The
smallest SOC squad since World
War II ended last season with
a record of three wins and five
losses, including a 26-13 victory
over the Oregon Collegiate con
ference Wolves of OCE.
No Affiliations
Southern Oregon college will
not be affiliated with any con
ference for the coming year, af
ter dropping out of the expand
ed Far Western conference.
Freshmen will be elibigle for
varsity play as before, and oth
er eligibility rules similar to
those of the Oregon Collegiate
conference will be followed.
The Red Raider schedule for
1953 is made up of seven ex
cellent small-college teams in
the Oregon and Northern Calif
ornia area. All home games will
be played on SOC's Fuller field.

The aching Acorns 'played
dead twice last night for the
Stars and as a result of their
twin victory, Hollywood whirl
ed to an HVi game lead over
Seattle in the closing stages of
the coast league pennant chase.
Chase is right. The Suds, flat
ter than last night's beer, suf
fered a 13-5 pasting from the
Portland Beavers who continued
to dog Los Angeles for third
place in the final standings. The
Cherubs kept a full two games
up on the Bevos, however, by
outlasting San Francisco 0-8 in
a nightmare of home runs.
Solon Headache
Another nightmare took' place
in San Diego, where the Padres
blasted the Sacramento Solons,
16-2.
Tom Saffell belted a three
run homer during a five-run up
rising in the seventh inning of
the opener to assure the Twinks
of a victory over the Acorns.
Five Homers
Eight pitchers made the
mound during the Seals-Seraphs
confusion as five home runs dis
appeared into the night. Sal Ta
ormina, Jim Moran and Reno
Dixie Upright and Frank Dlprt
ma countered for the Cherubs,
And after all that fuss, the game
was decided by one base hit in
the seventh.
The Padres knocked Herb Bes
se out of the box with three hits
and five runs in the first inning.
They tacked on four more
against Ken Kimball in the sec
ond Coach Vinnie Smith took
over in the third and did better
than either of them until the
eighth, when he was socked for
seven more runs.

club golfers will participate Fri
day, Saturday and Sunday in the
Oregon Golf association annual
Medal tournament at Oswego.
Making the jaunt will be Dr.
William Miller, George Harring
ton, Bob Rector, Clayton. Lewis
and Harry Millette.
Other members of the club
will vie in a team match here

American Legion junior baseball
team rolle over Salem 16-5 last
night to enter the regional dis
trict 11 finals.
Lewiston wrapped it up in the
fifth when it scored eight runs
with Bob Tarola's triple the big
blow. Lewiston had the bases
loaded twice in the big inning
and two of their runs were walk
ed home.
Lewiston plays Yakima to
night in a game which may or
may not decide the title. A Yaki
ma victory would give it the
title. However, should Lewiston
win, the two teams will then
play another game immediately
following with the title going to
the winner.
