Demo Leader, Dies

J Flynn, 61, former chairman
of the Democratic National com
mittee and boss for 30 years of
the Bronx county Democratic
organization died Monday while
vacationing in Ireland, it has
been announced here.
Death of the politician, who
was a confidant of the late Presi
dent Franklin D. Roosevelt, was
made public by Rep. Charles
Buckley, (D-N.Y.).
At the time of his death, Flynn
was serving his sixteenth con
secutive two year term as chair
man of the executive committee
of the Bronx Democratic com
mittee. It was this job as borough
' boss" that was the core of his
career as a key political figure in
the state and the nation.

Health Association Recommends Story About Tuberculosis

an article about tuberculosis in
the August issue of Cosmopoli

Farmers Reminded
On Child Labor
Salem The uncertainty of
fall school openings due to un
seasonable crop harvesting was
brought a reminder of child
labor regulations as they affect
Oregon farmers from state Labor
Commissioner W. E. Kimsey.
Kimsey said that according to
federal child labor law it is il
legal for any farmer to employ a
child under the age of 16, other
than his own children, during
school hours. When schools are
not in session there is no restric
tion on minors in agriculture ex
cept in processing machines.
Work permits from the labor de
partment are necessary for these
Jobs, and to work on them a
minor must be at least 16.
Farmers are responsible for
every under-age child working
on their farms Kimsey said,
pointing out that any doubt
about a child's true age can be
cleared by applying for a work
permit from the state labor de
partment A farmer found to be
wilfully employing a minor il
legally is subject to a $10,000
fine.

Opening Set in 6C
Schools of District
Central Point All, the
schools of School District 6C will
open on Sept 14. This Includes
the elementary schools at Sams
Valley and. Gold Hill, the ele
mentary and Junior high school
at Central Point and Crater high
school, according to Superinten
dent H. P. Jewett.
School buses will follow the
same routes as last year and the
beginning and closing hours will
be the same. All cafeterias will
serve lunch the first day of
school. High school students who
are new in the district should
plan to register 'on Thursday or
Friday, Sept 10 or 11.
Children who are six years of
age on or before Nov. 15, will
bj admitted without testing.
Children who will be six years
of age any time between Nov. 19
and Jan. 15 will be admitted pro
viding they show a sufficiently
high rating on the school readi
ness test. .This test will be given
by appointment on Aug. 25. Any
parent desiring to have a child
tested should call the school sup
erintendent's off ice, Central
Point 1542, and arrange for an
appointment
Portland U.R) Multnomah
county, outside of Portland, has
recorded its 16th traffic fatality
of 1953 with the death of John
Hartberg, 60.
36 Disease Cases Listed Last Week '
Thirty-six eases of communi
cable diseases were reported to
the Jackson county health de
partment last week. .
Mumps again led the list with
14 cases reported, 11 of them in
Medf ord and 3 in Ashland. Pneu
monia was next with six cases,
three in Medf ord, one in Central
Point and two in Ashland.
Five cases of whooping cough
were reported, Medf ord two,
Ashland, two and Talent one;
Medford reported two cases of
strep throat and two cases of
measles. Two cases of chicken
pox were reported in Medford
and one in Central Point.
Two cases of polio, previously
reported, were included in the
health department's list This
makes a total of three ease, in
the county this year. One case,
reported in Rogue River, Is pre
paralytic the other case, a light
one, is in Medford. One case of '
influenza was reported, M was
in Medford.
Washington (U.R) The
Agriculture department said to
day more than 1,500 forest fires
were reported in Montana, Cal
ifornia, Idaho, Washington and
Oregon during the week ended
Aug. 17, making it one of the
worst on record.
The. fire danger in all five
states is still "extreme," Forest
service officials said.
