Olson, Turpin Slate Championship Bout

Olson's manager said today he
was "very well pleased" with
the terms of a world middle
weight title fight between Olson
ard Randy Turpin.
Manager Sid Flaherty said the
inclusion of a "no return bout"
clause meant a "major victory
foi us."
Pleased With Deal
"I'm very pleased with the
deal," Flaherty said. "I didn't
tiiink English promoter Jack
Solomons would give in, but we
finally won out."
It was announced in New York
yesterday that Turpin, European
middleweight champ, had agreed
to a 15-round title fight against
Olson Oct. 21. The bout will be
held in Madison Square Garden.
The agreement climaxed two
months of wrangling over where
the bout should be held and
whether there would be a return
match. Flaherty wanted the
fight in San Francisco and in
sisted on only one bout.
Fighter First Consideration
"I'm very disappointed that
we couldn't stage the fight in
San Francisco." he said. "But
my first consideration is to my
fighter and now if Bobo wins
he's got the title, period.
"If we went to England with
the championship we wouldn't
come back with it."
Flaherty said it was the no
return bout clause that decided

blame Monte Irvin if he feels
that he has
more than his
share.
Monte is the
powerful, soft
spoken fellow
who led the
miracle Giants
of 1951 to the
National base
ball league
pennant. He
didn't get the
credit then
that he should have, and hasn't
since.
It seems that it always has
been that way with Monte.
Back in the days of his
youth, his dreams always
war of being a big star in
the major leagues. Then, when
he had become one of the lop
player in the Negro leagues,
he was passed over, year aft
er discouraging year as oth
ers with less talent than he
were called up under the big
top.
After three years of waiting
he finally earned a long awaited
chance with the Giants.
A year later he was a regular
and in 1951 he was the winning
sparkplug.
He led the National league in
in runs batted in, hitting .312,
and in the series batted a re
sounding .458. Against Allie
Reynolds in the classic, he
smashed four hits and daringly
stole home. J
But Monte wasn't recognized
as the most valuable player. The
vote had been taken before the
season's end and the honor went
to Roy Campenella.
The next spring, in an April,
exhibition game, Monte slid
into third base and shattered
his right ankle. Manager Leo
Durocher standing in his room
beside the ether befogged
Monte, worriedly asked the
doctors what were Monte's
chances.
"He won't play this year," one
said.
"Don't worry skipper," Irvin
said thorugh his private haze. 'I'll
be back this year. I've got good
bones and I heal quick."
He was back i late July, and
still hobbling, played 46 games
before season's end, and hit an
amazing .310 in the bargain.
That ankle still bothers him,
physically and in action, but as
of Sunday the leader in the Na
tional league batting race with
a .339 average was Irvin. Then
misfortune steuck again.
Monte crashed into Cardinal
catcher Del Riie at the plate
and suffered a sprain of that
still tender ankle.
A player needs 400 times at
bat to win the hitting title.
Monte has been up 395 times,
That means he needs five more
appearances at the plate. He'll
get them, assuredly, but this
new injury rould be the means
of lowering his average below
the top. .

'Chicago U.R) An expert
on city development says the
future of central business dis
tricts in many cities may de
pend largely on the orderly re
arrangement of the downtown
area
J. D. Carroll Jr., discussed
the problem in Public Manage
ment, monthly journal of the In-,
ternational City Managers' as
sociation. Carroll, director of the De
troit Metropolitan Area study,
said city officials must encour
age the intensive use of existing
commercial sites, and must make
it easier for traffic and people
to move within 'the downtown
business districts.
Two major trends, increased
automobile registrations and the
postwar boom in suburban dev
elopment, have magnified the
problems of the central business
district, Carroll said.
- He said a study at Flint, Mich,
showed that travel by automo
bile diminishes as cities increase
in size, due to traffic congestion
and travel distances.
But he said despite these fac
tors, "the larger the city the
greater the parking problem."
The study of Flint showed a
"steady, relative decline in real
property values in the central
business district, especially in
land values," Carroll said.
CAB Hearing Bails "

day hearing called by the Civil
Aeronautics Board to investi
gate the crash of a Transocean
Air Lines DC-6 July 12 was re
cessed yesterday without turn
ing up a clue to the disaster.
The plane crashed about 340
miles from Wake Island, killing
58 persons. It was en route from
Guam to Oakland.
Writer Seeks Injunction
Against Carmichael

$1,250,000 damages and a Super
ior court injunction restraining
Hoagy Carmichael's "Saturday
Night Review" television show.
In a suit filed yesterday, Rapp
charged that material from his
old radio program was stolen by
Carmichael's show.
