HO HEWS," RE SATS Soviet United Nations delegate Andrei
Vishinsky waves upon his arrival in New York. After several repor
ters fired questions, the Russian answered: "I have no news. I have
keen away from Russia for five days."
Around Hollywood United Press Cerrespoiidcaf
Hollywood (U.PJ Eddie
Cantor, who pushed Dinah Shore
to success, decided today the
new crop 01
female vocal
ists, except for
one, are "imita
tions." Back in 1939
the big - eyed
television - and
radio comedian
discovered
Dinah singing
with Y i v i m r
Aline Mosbv cugatandput
her on the map via his radio
show. He calls her "the most
natural singer since Nora
Eaves."
"Dinah sings like Dinah
Shore," he said. "But these new
girls today they're carbon
copies of Dinah and Lena Home.
They have no individuality.
"The only one I pick for star
dom is Connie Russell. She
started on my show, and now
she has her own show. I think
she'll be another great name in
show business."
Cantor found it easier to select
the males who he thinks will
climb the ladder. In fact, he
said, this year produced the big
gest crop of new entertainers in
10 years because ' television is
replacing vaudeville as a show
case for them.
He said TV-comic Red Buttons
is barreling along to becoming
one of the all-time great come

playing the borscht biscuit in
the Catskill "mountains," said
Contor. "He used to cry on my

EP Man Arrested on

roll up. Now he's a success on
TV and in night clubs."
He also Dicks dancer Sammy
Davis Jr., who's appeared on
Eddie's TV program three tunes.
Cantor collected more fan mail
from those shows than from any
others, the comedian admitted.
Vera Ricky, an eight -year-
cld who made his debut on
Hoagy Carmichael's program,
has "more charm than the last
100 kids I've seen," Cantor went
on.
"Give him another year and
he'll be a big star," he said.
"Then there's Gary Morton,
also on television, and singer
Eddie Fisher. He's appeared with
with me several times. I think
by the end of 1953 he'll be the
most popular male singer in the
country."
What makes these newcomers
potential big stars?
Warmth, he said. You'll find
that quality in the stars such as
Sophie Tucker, Cantor, Groucho
Marx, Al Johson, Judy Garland,
Bob Hope.
"These new kids have some
thing beyond talent and per
sonality, and that's warmth. If
the audience doesn't think you
really like them, they know it.
A lot of people never become
stars because they telegraph to
the audience that they're doing
them a helluva favor by Just
appearing."
