French Team Takes
One Mile Plunge

French officers today submitted
secret reports to the French
Navy on their observations dur
ing a record one mile plunge be
iieatb the sea.
The descent of the two in a
Navy bathysphere set a new
world's record for underwater
exploration of 5,113 feet.
The French team of Auguste
and Jacques Piccard has been
making preparations for months
for a bathysphere descent of two
and one-half miles beneath the
sea.

Piccard, widely known for his
stratosphere balloon trips took
his bathysphere down on two
shallow test dives today and said
any attempt to better the French
record must await further tests
of his cigar shaped underwater
craft.
The French team took their
loorcfv wraDoed craft down to
record depth 10 miles southwest
of Cape Cepet, near here.

14-year-old companion, seized on
charge of stealing two horses
in Leesburg, Va., overheard an
officer ask whether Virginia still
lists horse theft as a "hanging
offense." The two youths began
to breath again after another of

Stanford, Calif. (U.R) Stan
ford University scientists said
today they have perfected the
world's most powerful micro
scope.
They said it is a combination
of two complex machines which
permits them to distinguish par
ticles only two one-hundredths
of a trillionth of an inch within
the nucleus of an atom.
Another Apparatus
The physicists also disclosed
that plans are on the drawing
board for another apparatus
even more powerful which they
believe will probe to the small'
est structures in ordinary matter.
The apparatus shown yester
day is a combination of the pow
erful electron linear accelerator,
a form of "atom smasher," and
a high energy electron scattering
apparatus which uses a 2',i ton
magnet as an "eyepiece."
'Shoots' Electrons
The scientists said the accel
erator "shoots" electrons which
penetrate the nucleus of the
atom, and the scattering appara
tus measures their number and
the angles at which they are de
flected. Dr. Robert Hofstadter is in
charge of the project, assisted
by graduate student Harry R.
Fechter and laboratory special
ist John A. Mclntyre.
Entries were coming in
"good," Cate reported, in the
exhibit section which includes
cooking, clothing, food preserva
tion, home making, forestry,
electricity, gardening, fleeces,
hobbies and health.
Entries for the livestock sec

FBI Investigation
Of Oil Industry
To Study Gas Price
Washington W.R) The
Justice Department has ordered
an FBI Investigation of the oil
Industry to determine whether
there was illegal collusion in
the recent wave of gasoline price
increases, it was learned today.
To Study Evidence
Official sources said the In
quiry was ordered at the request
of the department's anti-trust
division. The trust busters will
study the evidence gatherd by
the FBI before deciding whether
to seek indictments charging oil
companies with a price fixing
conspiracy.
A series of increases sent re
tail gasoline prices up two cents
a gallon or more in many areas
of the country earlier this sum
mer. The House Commerce com
mittee held hearings on the price
boosts at that time.
Open To Suspicion
While the committee made no
formal charges,' Chairman
Charles A. Woverton, (R-N. J.),
asserted that the industry had
laid itself open to suspicion by
Jacking up prices at a time when
a looming surplus should have
brought competitive price cuts.
Rep. John W. Heselton, R-Mass.,
a member of the committee,
termed the increases "completely
unjustified", and urged the Jus
tice Department to look into the
matter.
Morse Predicts
Demos To Regain
Control of House
Cleveland, O. U.R) Sen.
Wayne Morse of Oregon says
Democrats will regain control
of the House in the next election
and adds they also "have a good
chance" to regain control of the
Senate.
Speaking before the 10th an
nual convention of the AFL
Chemical Workers' union here,
Morse said he will compaign for
election of Democrats next
year "because liberalism is dead
in the Republican party."
He also blasted the Eisen
hower administration's record
for the past six months.
"The Eisenhower administra
tion's record for the first six
months is a record of failure,"
Morse said. "It has failed to
balance the budget, reduce
taxes or the national debt, as
Eisenhower promised in his cam
paign speeches."

McCarthy Say
To United States Bomb Secrete
Washington (U.R) Senator
Joseph Rj McCarthy said today
he has heard sworn testimony
that a Communist employed in
the Government Printing Office
has had "access" to A-bomb and
H-bomb secrets.
The Wisconsin Republican re
fused to identify the employee.
The testimony was heard in se
cret by the Senate Investiga
tions subcommittee which Mc
Carthy heads.
"We have information that at
the time the individual was
working at the Government
Printing Office he had access
to top secret material having
to do with the A-bomb and the
H-bomb," McCarthy told re
porters. Public Hearing Monday . '
An atomic energy spokesman
said, however, that no "restrict
ed data is sent to the regular,
main Government Printing Of
fice." He declined to elaborate.
The subcommittee, which has
been hearing secret testimony
on the case all week, will start
public hearings Monday.
McCarthy said the "individu
al" under investigation has been
identified by "several witnesses"
as having been a Communist. He
said the person has denied this
under oath.
Board Cleared Employee
Edward M. Rothschild, a vet
eran bookbinder at the printing
office, revealed through his at
torney yesterday that he has
been a target in McCarthy's late
est Reds in government investi
gation. Claared in 1949
His chief attorney, Charles E.
Ford, said a printing office loyal
ty board cleared Rothschild in
1949 of apparently the same
Communist charges that have
been raised before the subcom
mittee. Rothschild and his wife,
Esther, are under subpoena by
the subcommittee.
McCarthy said the testimony
involving access to atomic bomb
secrets came from "individuals"
and not from Government Print
ing Office officials. But he said
officials had testified that the
printing agency handled "se
cret" material of the Atomic
Energy Commission.
McCarthy, (R-Wis.), has said
the secret hearings, which will
be public starting next week,
have dealt with charges that a
government worker with access
to secret documents is a Com
munist party member. But he
has refused to confirm or deny
that Rothschild is the man in
volved. '
Ford yesterday showed re
porters a letter from the Print
ing Office Loyalty Board dated
March 3, 1949, expressing satis
faction with Rothschild's loyalty.
Transcripts Mad Public
He also made public tran
scripts of two hearings held be
fore the board in late 1948 in
which Rothschild flatly denied
charges that he was a member
of the Communist party, a mem
bar of the Washington Book
Shop Corporation, or associated
with persons affiliated with
Communist organizations. The
identity of his accusers was not
divulged.
Rothschild himself refused to
talk to reporters.
