Rated Top
By Managers
New York U.R) Paul
Richards may not win a pennant
with the Chicago White Sox
this year but he is winning re
peated praise from his fellow
pilots today as "the smartest
manager in the majors."
Even such National League
skippers as Chuck Dressen, Leo
Durocher and Rogers Hornsby
are paying tribute to Richards'
managerial genius while a poll
of American League managers
reveals that he Is rated at the
top.
"Richards would be success
at anything he undertook,"
points out Manager Marty Mar
ion of the St. Louis Browns.
"He's smart as a whip, he knows
how to get the most out of his
material and he always comes
up with the unexpected."
Bucky Harris of Washington
and Freddie Hutchinson of the
Detroit Tigers also rate Rich
ards highly.
When Casey Stengel of the
Yankees was asked point blank
whether he thought Richards
was the smartest manager in the
majors, he grinningly replied:
"That would be a great thing
for me to say, now wouldn't it?
But I will say this much. He's a
real smart cookie and you know
you've been in a ball game every
time you play against him."
