ton fans, who don't have much
"Vise to cheer about, were wonder
ing today if perhaps Bob Porter
field is their best pitcher since
the days of the immortal Walter
Johnson.
Porterfield has a long way to
go to earn that reputation but
his 2-0 birthday one-hitter over
the Red Sox last night gave him
eight shutouts for the season, the
, most by a Washington hurler
since Johnson hurled that many
30 years ago in 1924.
It was the third blanking job
in a row for the mighty right
hander rfom Newport, Va., giv
ing him a string of 29 scoreless
innings, one for every year of
his life on his 29th birthday.
Williams Out
The one big thrill in his big
night came with nobody out in
the ninth after he walked Jimmy
Piersall, who had spoiled his
chance for a no-hitter with a
single in the third. Up came Ted
Williams as a pinch-hitter but
the Red Sox slugger, who
homered in a similar role yester
day, struck out.
Porterfield threw terrible Ted
dy only four pitches.
The ex-Yankee hurler put no
one but Piersall on base. He
struck out three in pitching to
only 28 men. The guy who was
snubbed by Manager Casey Sten
gel for the all-star game now has
shut out every team in the league
except Detroit.
Other Game
In the only other major league
game, the Braves cut Brooklyn's
lead to 6V& games when they
topped the Cardinals, 8-2, on a
seven-hitter by lefty Warren
Spahn, who won his 15th game.
It was Milwaukee's sixth
straight victory and it was
achieved quickly when the
Braves battered around in the
second inning to score five runs.
Johnny Logan, Andy Pafko, Del
Crandall, and Sid Gordon made
two hits apiece as .the Braves
collected 11, but got only one in
the four final innings off reliever
Cliff Chambers.

Charles was a 1-3 favorite to
defeat Nino Valdes of Cuba in
their scheduled 10-round bout to-,
night and score the sixth consec
utive victory of his "comeback
campaign."
Charles, who hopes to be
matched with the winner of the
Rocky Marciano-Roland LaStar
za heavyweight title bout on
Sept. 24, expected to scale about
90 pounds and give away some
21 pounds to his six-foot, three
inch opponent. Charles will en
ter the ring with a string of five
straight victories, including

Picks Baseball Coach

University of Idaho has an
nounced the appointment of
Clem Parberry, former athletic
director and head coach at the
College of Idaho,, as baseball
coach and general assistant in
the Vandal athletic department.
He will take over baseball du-4
ties from Chuck Finley, who will
devote full time as head basket
ball coach.
Parberry, who joined the Col
lege of Idaho staff in 1938, is a
native of Oregon City, Ore., and
a graduate of Pacific university.

The Grants Pass nine took
over first place in the league
when Cave Junction disbanded
for the season and forfeited' a
postponed contest. Cave Junc
tion also forfeited Sunday's con
test to Butte Falls, giving the
Butte Falls club a tie with Cen
tral Point for third place.
Ashland closed out its home
season Sunday by receipting for
a 9 to 1 drubbing at the hands of
Glendale's second place crew.
The Glendale victory set the
stage for a "big" game next Sun
day at Glendale when Grants
Pass and Glendale .battle for the
league title.
Ashland was never in the con
test Sunday as John Harbour
gave out only three bingles
while his mates were combing

Washington (U.R) The Fish
and Wildlife service today is
sued liberalized migratory wa
terfowl bunting rules for the
1953-54 season, and said hunters
may shoot until sunset in all
flyways.
10 Per Cent Penalty
The regulations permit each
state to select its own water
fowl hunting season within the
period of October 1 to January
10, with a choice of a split or
consecutive season. If a split
season is chosen, the number
of hunting days must be 10 per
cent fewer than for a consecu
tive season. The penalty form

Although baiting of blinds is
still outlawed, hunters will not
be-punished for shooting within
one half mile of bait as they
have been for the last two years.
In addition, a special "experi
mental" season of 15 days in all
flyways has been set on Wilson's
snipe, or jack snipe, with bag
and possession limits of eight
birds. This season has been
closed since 1941.
Good Hunting Hour
The decision to extend shoot
ing hours to sunset instead of
one hour before sunset as in re
cent years resulted from consid
erable pressure in the Central
and Pacific flyways. A Fish and
Wildlife service official said the
last hour before sunset is a par
ticularly good hunting hour,
when "the ducks are moving."
The starting time of one half
hour before sunrise remains in
effect in all flyways. On the
opening day of each state s sea
son, including each first day of
split seasons, waterfowl and
coot may not be hunted before
noon.
Other changes in waterfowl
rules included:
Pacific flyway: Season in
creased five days over last year
to 75-day season or two 43-day
periods. Duck bag and possession
limits 'increased from six to sev
en, plus four pintails or widg

Medford Clinic
The Oregon School Activities
association has scheduled a foot
ball clinic for August 19 at Med
ford senior high school, it was
announced today. The clinic will
be conducted by A. Oden Hawes,
assistant secretary-treasurer of
the OSAA.
The clinic is scheduled to open
at 8 p.m. It will include official
interpretations of the 1953 rules,
and examination of officials for
certification.
