Symphonic Brass Ensemble
To Give Concert on Sunday
Ashland Music lovers who hear the Oregon Shakespearean
festival's first concert of Elizabethan music Sunday evening will
hear the second brass ensemble formed by professional musicians
In this country.

ensemble, made up of musicians
from the Portland symphony
orchestra, was formed this past
spring and the group's debut, at
Reed college in Portland, was an
experiment to determine wheth
er the public desired the unus
ual musical fare. The success of
the debut was marked by a re
engagement to play at Reed
graduation ceremonies and the
installation of a new president
at the Portland institution.
Following these engagements,
the group played in various
schools in the Portland area.
Next year, three extensive tours
will take the musicians to col
leges and universities in Wash
ington, Montana, Idaho and Cal
ifornia, and into Canada.
The concert from the festival
theater stage Sunday evening
will be two hours long, and will
feature the spirited marches
and dances of the Elizabethan
era. The concert will begin at
8:30 p.m.
Tickets are on sale at the
theater box office in Ashland
and in Swem's Book and Gift
shop in Medford. Tickets will be
available to holders of festival
season tickets at a lower price.
Children's tickets are also available.

Honor Troxells
At Last Meeting
At the last meeting of circles
of First Christian church, mem
bers honored Mr. and Mrs. Del
bert Troxell and son, Jon Mark.
The Troxells, who visited rela
tives here, have left for Japan
where they will work as mission
aries for Disciples of Christ.
Tables for the luncheon meet
ing were decorated in the Jap
anese theme.
Attending the event were Mr.
Troxell's mother, Mrs. Wayne
Troxell, Medford; his sisters,
Mrs. David Barbison, Klamath
Falls, Mrs. Max Gable and Miss
Frances Troxell, Medford: his
sister-in-law, Mrs. Beverly Trox
ell, Auburn, Wash., and six
nieces and nephews.
Following the luncheon solos
were sung by Mrs. Wayne Smith
and Mrs. Effie Kurtz, Chehalis,
Wash. Mrs. Elmer Gott gave two
readings dedicated to the hon
ored guests. A gift of money,
wrapped as floral pieces and
made into an old-fashioned nose
gay, was presented to the Trox
ells. Highlight of the afternoon was
a question and answer period
led by the two missionaries and
during which they told of their
plans for their, work in Japan,
At the close, Mrs. Troxell sang,
Mrs. Arnold Bohnert led de
votions.
The committee for the lunch
eon and program was composed
of Mrs. A. H. Gregory, Mrs. Will
Kennerley and Mrs. A. W.
Denny.

Summer Teen-Age Dance
Scheduled at YMCA
A summer teen-age dance will
be held at the YMCA building
at 8 p.m. Friday, August 7.
The dance, sponsored by the
, will be he fifth in a series
of six dances to be held for teen
agers this summer. The four
previous dances have been very
well attended with crowds of
more than a hundred people, a
'Tr spokesman reported.

Mrs. Marion Lance has re
turned to her home at 1009 East
Main street after spending three
weeks vacationing in Roseburg
and Salem. Mrs. Lance spent
three days with Mrs. Grant Mat
thews, formerly of Grants Pass
and now of Roseburg, and two
weeks with Mrs. George Hull;
Salem.

given Tuesday in the home of

Games were the diversion of
the afternoon, and refreshments
were served. Mrs. Casper was

Grove Garden Club
Has Supper Party
At Thurman Home
Grove Garden club members
held the annual outdoor sum
mer supper recently in the gar
dens of the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Lyle Thurman. Supper was
served on the lawn, bordered by
tall flowers and a high laurel
hedge, and in the covered patio.
A tour of the gardens found
many rose trees in bloom, and
miniature rose and gold canna
lilies. The Thurman gardens are
particularly known for the tree
peonies, and visitors comment
ed on the fact that not a single
weed was to be found.
During the evening there was
discussion of the bird programs
intended for some of the winter
meetings.

salesman Geary Steffen Jr. in

The pert nice girl of the movie
musicals flew here from Holly
wood last night in time to catch
Nelson's first show at the Sahara
hotel, where he as been appear
ing for the last 10 days.
Between the dancer's perfor
mances, she and Nelson occupied
table together, chatting inti
mately and gazing fondly at one
another.

was ready to step into the part
when Gerald Gardner became
ill.
Young Actress
To Play Role
Of Boy Tonight
Ashland Joyce Womack,
young Carnegie institute drama
student who has won praise for
her portrayal of Portia and
Bianca in plays in the Shake
rpearean festival this season,
goes on tonight in a role she
probably never expected to
play.
Miss Womack will play a boy's
role that of young King Hen
rv in the festival's "Henry VI,
Part 1."
James Sandoe, the play's di
rector, seriously considered Miss
Womack for the role of the boy
king during auditions, but fi
nally asked her to understudy
the role. When Gerald Gardner
was forced to drop out of the
cat because of illness, she im
mediately stepped into the part.
Director Sandoe said that he
felt Tier role of Portia would
help her in playing "Henry VI,"
since her court-room scene in
"Merchant of Venice" demands
that the charming heroine of the
play masquerade as a young
man. He also observed that wo
men had played men's roles be
fore in festival productions, re
versing the Elizabethan practice
of using men even in women's
roles.
The part that Miss Wdmack is
now playing, Sandoe said, is
that of a boy-king a minor
with better judgement than most
of his elders, who strives sensi
bly but ineffectually to resolve
the conflicts within his king
dom.

Student Art Show Planned

Pupils enrolled in the 1953 summer art classes of Eugene Ben
ett will have their work displayed in the sixth annual show
this week end. The exhibit will be held Saturday and Sunday, Aug
ust 8 and 9, on the lawn and in the Bennett studio at 333 South
Grape street. Hours will be from 2 to 9:30 p.m. and the public
is invited to attend.
