Reds Killed Two Chaplains for
Holding Services, Ex-POWs Say

Freed war prisoners revealed to
day the Communists killed two
chaplains for holding secret
Christmas services and broke the
will of many Americans.
Pvt. Edward R. Achee,
medic from Detroit, said the fear
less chaplains, one a Roman
Catholic and the other a Protest
ant, died of beatings after con
ducting the forbidden services.
Another liberated prisoner,
Pfc. William J. Skipper, said he
saw about 1,000 Americans die
of malnutrition, dysentery and
other ailments at Pyoktong dur
ing the two years and six months
he spent there.
Gave Up Hop
"The guys just didn't have any
will power," Skipper, of Gali
vants Ferry, S. C, said.
Skipper indicated that the men
had given up hope of getting out
alive.
Achee said the two chaplains
went to his camp on Christmas
day of 1950 to comfort the enlist
ed men with religious services,
"When they got back to their
own compound, they were pretty
badly treated," Achee said. The
Protestant chaplain died a week
later and the Catholic chaplain
month later.
Taken Far Away
So many atrocities have been
reported by prisoners returning
to freedom in "Operation Big
Switch" that the Army's hopes
of recovering thousands of miss
ing soldiers have fade
Army intelligence already has
learned that some of the cap
tured Americans were taken as
far away as Czechoslovakia and
Poland for propaganda purposes
and that others have been con
scripted for slave labor in Man-
churian mines and factories

stitutes a promotion, to organ
ize a new office in accounting
and management at the ship
yard.
Henderson, who was in the
Navy in the last war, started in
government service at the Ft.
Peck dam. Montana, in 1935. He
went to school at Everett and
members of his family now live
there. Henderson was active in
Medford community life and is
a member of the Toastmasters
club.
He came to Camp White from
Montana as one of the original
team sent there to convert the
camp into a VA domiciliary.
KNEW WHERE TO GO

permission if he leaves.
Avoided Army Service
The Department of Justice
charged he is an alien ineligible
for U. S. citizenship because he
avoided the military draft in
1944 on grounds he was a citi
zen of a neutral country, Argen
tina. Haymes, insisting he was no
draft dodger, said "I was exam
ined twice and found physically
unfit because of hypertension and
high blood pressure."
Miss Hayworth, whose charms
got Haymes into legal hot water,
was busy having her picture
taken by a magazine photog
rapher at her Brentwood man
sion when the crooner was ar
rested. Nothing to Say
"Miss Hayworth has nothing
to say," the star's secretary said.
But HajVnes estranged wife,
Nora, a former wife of actor Er
rol Flynn, staunchly defended
him. She said she would resume
the action after Haymes was
