Spain's traditionally strict code
of morality will be adhered to
by all seaside visitors, both for
eign and demestic, unless they
wish to be arraigned for inde
cent exposure.
In a memorandum issued by
police headquarters here, men
and women looking forward to
the restful pleasures of sand and
sea were reminded to be clothed
"with the traditionally modesty
and good-taste becoming Span
lards." The memorandum, published
in all the papers, admonished
against current indecencies of
strapless and two-piece bathing
suits, bikinis and G-strings.
The memorandum said,
"swimming suits should cover
both chest and back adequately.
Women's bathing suits should
have a skirt and men must wear
sport-shorts.
"Swimming suits may not be
worn on beaches, at clubs, bars,
restaurants, boats or generally
outside the . water

Tax Reductions
Chicago U.R) A study by
the Federation of Tax Adminis
trators reveals that a number
of states have approved propos
als for income tax reductions in
the form of credits, expanded
deductions and rate revisions
This is what the various state
legislatures have done thus far
in 1953:
Colorado: A 20 per cent credit
allowed individuals and corpora
tions for every taxable year
since 1950 was extended for an
other year.
Idaho: A 13 per cent tax credit
was allowed individuals and cor
porations beginning with the
1953 tax year.
Iowa: The legislature has sent
the governor a measure to make
permanent a temporary 25 per
cent tax credit first allowed on
1947 income.
Kansas: Allowed an added de
duction of $600 to persons over
65 and blind.
Maryland: Extended the 15
per cent credit first allowed in
dividuals last year.
Montana: Allowed a medical
deduction up to $1,250 for each
taxpayer and each dependent,
with a maximum deduction of
$2 500 on a single person's re
turn and $5,000 on a joint re
turn.
New York: Extended for an
other year the 10 per cent credit
it has allowed on personal in
come taxes and a 25 per cent
reduction in its unincorporated
business tax rate.
North Dakota: Revised tax
brackets, cutting taxes from two
to one per cent on net income
between $2,000 and $3,000, from
12.5 to 10 per cent on net in
come between $10,000 and $15,
000, and from 15 to 11 per cent
on net income above $15,000.
The state has also raised the
personal exemption " for single
taxpayers and dependents from
$500 to $600 and allowed an ad
ditional $600 exemption for in
dividual taxpayers and each
spouse over 65.

Roller-Coaster Belt Transports Coal

A "roller-coaster," almost three
miles long but dedicated to a
more serious purpose than thrills
is functioning every day in the
Kanawha river valley near here.
It is the 14,000-foot-long con
veyor belt system leading from
a mine in the side of a mountain
to barges in the Kanawha river
near Montgomery, W. Va.
The mine is one of the sources
of coal for a large steam-generating
plant being built on the
river at Glasgow, W. Va. Geolo
gists estimate that at the present
rate of production the mine will
still be going full blast after
the next 100 years.
The belts are in nine sections,
each hopked up with a power
system capable of delivering 550
HP but actually using only 263
net HP electrical input. Three of
the belts move down hill and
actually generate power;

has ben reduced by 199,516 be
cause of congressional cuts. Dr.
Harold M. Erickson, state health
officer said today.
He said that the state's vener
eal disease program would be
wiped out because of loss of all
the $26,411 grant for this pur
pose. Reductions also will be
made In tuberculosis, cancer,
mental health, heart disease and
maternal and child health pro
grams. Dr. Erickson said.
Dr. Erickson said that unless
the State Emergency Board
moves to replace the federal
funds, no action to restore the
cuts by the state could be taken
until the next Legislature, in
1955.
