Sewage Problems
Again Discussed
By Phoenix Council
Phoenix Further report was
made at Monday's Phoenix coun
cil meeting on proposed sewage
construction, according to Mayor
Kathryn Stancliffe.
City Attorney Frank VanDyke
reported on a Salem meeting
with state sanitation authorities
regarding state aid for the pro
ject. He cautioned against hasty
action and Mrs. Stancliffe noted
that a "great deal of preliminary
work is to be done before a plan

drawn up to close a small por
tion of Second st. from "B" st.
to the irrigation ditch, near the
grade school gym. The school
district had requested the clos
ure as it has purchased the for
mer Steadman property adjoin
ing the street
The new school building is
planned for the area, she said.
Police Chief Jim Perry re
quested a bicycle rack to be
erected in town and the council
directed Perry and Councilman
H. R. Jensen to carry the pro
ject out
A report was made on the
remodeling of the city hall and
library. An interior partition in
the library room will be re
moved and the oil stove taken
out and replaced with electric
heat, the mayor said, before
painting starts.
Electricians worked - all last
week in the installation of the
electrical wiring for the new
pump for the well's siphoning
system and installation of the
pump began today and will con
tinue tomorrow. All irrigation
has been ordered stopped for
the two days of installation, Mrs.
Stancliffe said, and it is hoped
that the new pump will keep the
city's reservoir full enough to
avoid restricted use.
Frozen Orange Juice
To Mount in Price
Washington (U.R) An
agriculture Department official
said the price of frozen orange
juice is going up because Ameri
cans are drinking it faster than
It can be processed.
Me estimated yesterday that
household purchases alone are
currently running at a rate of
about 55,000,000 gallons a year,
and that doesn't count the large
volume used by hotels and res
taurants. The department estimates that
total output of frozen orange
juice concentrate this year at
about 50,500.000 gallons.
The official said there Is no
immediate danger of an orange
Juice shortage because producers
can draw on their cold storage
stocks. Built up in past years
when the demand wasn't so
great, these stocks totalled about
23,242,000 gallons at the end
of June.
Gen. Clark Planning
To Retire Oct. 31
Washington (U.R) Gen.
Mark W. Clark, Far East com
mander, announced today that
he plans to retire from the Army
next Oct 31 after 40 years serv
ice. Clark made the announcement
at a news conference here where
he has been holding conferences
frior to returning to his head
quarters in Tokyo.
He said he hoped his successor
would be designated in time for
"an orderly turnover" in com
mand so that he could return
to the United States in September.
Repatriated Soldiers
Air Lifted to Japan
Tokyo (U.R) Sixteen Ameri
ran repatriates were air lifted to
Japan today from Korea.
Also aboard the C-124 Globe
master were 12 Filipinos, 7
Colombians, 20 Turks, seven
French, one Greek and one Bel
gian returned prisoners.
