Settlement for
Work on Dalles
Bridge Accepted
Portland U.R) A settlement
of $1,993,000 from the govern
ment for work already done on
The Dalles bridge will be ac
cepted, Wasco county officials
have indicated to the State High
way Commission.
Wasco County Judge W. R.
Webber said Tuesday the settle
ment did not repay all funds in
vested but would be accepted be
cause of "hazards of a court
case." The bridge is a joint pro
ject of Wasco county and The
Dalles.
Work . Abandoned
Work on the Columbia river
bridge was mostly abandoned at
the first selected site when
Army engineers began work on
The Dalles dam. Location of the
bridge was shifted downstream.
Judge Webber told the com
mission the dam's spillway
could have been utilized m
building the bridge, but could
not have been completed until
1957. He said that it can be com
pleted by late 1953 or 1954 by
swinging the terminus of the
Oregon end of the bridge down'
stream.
Judge Webber said that to the
$1,993,000, Wasco county would
add $1,600,000 left in its bond
fund, sell revenue . bonds for
another $500,000 to $700,000,
use what fabricated steel it has
left and proceed.
He said bids would be called
about September 10.
Josephine County
Fair Opens Tuesday
Grants Pass The 31st annual
Josephine County fair was offic
ially opened here last night by
Queen Barbara Peterson of the
Roseburg, Douglas County Cen
tennial. The fair is scheduled to
run through Saturday. . '
Judging of 4-H club entries
started this" morning at the fair
and is to continue throughout the
day. Today's program will close
with a free concert by the Grants
Pass "state championship high
school band; races by Jackson
and Josephine county Young
Farmers and other groups, and
a variety show.
One of the. feature events of
today's program was judging
this morning of flower show ex
hibits. A special lath house has
been set up for the ejfcibits,
which will be on public display
during the rest of the week.
FASTEST BEER GUZZLER
Sapporo, Japan (U.R) Y. Hat
ano, a 27-year-old taxi driver,
won the title of "best beer guz
zler" of Hokkaido Island
Wednesday in a contest before
20,000 spectators. He downed a
quart of beer in 15 seconds flat,
three seconds faster than the
runner-up. A field of 27 guzzlers
competed, including one woman.
