home fabrics designs this Fall
will be reproductions of pieces
used in homes almost 200 years
ago.
Fabric and wallpaper design
ers are findnig a wealth of ideas
in museums throughout the
country. In many cases old
homes dating from the 18th cen
tury and set aside as historical
landmarks provide an inspira
tion for new designs.

icles such as patchwork quilts
made by hte early settlers,
primitive paintings, and early

Most designers believe that
good design is ageless, that
those designs which were out
standing in their -time, will be
outstanding now.
Many of these old-new prints
appearing in this Fall's home
decorating fashions are as adapt
able to contemporary decor as
to homes decorated in early
American or Victorian periods.
Translucent materials for
wall-to-wall draperies ' are fea
tured for the modern' home
with wide expanses of glass to
let in light and air, and yet as
sure privacy. They are avail-
well and are also a favorite
choice for glass curtains and for
traverse drapes.
Richly textured surfaces, rus
tic linen and shantung weaves,
are repeated in many smart
drapery fabrics in solid colors
and a wealth of distinctive geo
metric, modern print themes
and abstract patterns.
White and neutral grounds
are preferred. A pattern in a sin
gle color, or at most two colors,
looks newer than the conven
tional multi-color floral designs.
If you like to do something
that's really different, consider

selves to a variety of decorating
uses. A striped fabric as a slip
cover for an extra chair provides
pleasing contrast when other
slipcovered pieces in the same
room are done in solir color

SPOTS OUT ......
Wool suiting - can be "spot
cleaned" with soap and water in
an emergency.; Water , soluble
grease spots and " sugary ' or
syrupy stains come off with a
soapy damp cloth. Rinse by wip
ing with a clean damp cloth.

Styling in Fall hosiery is in
fluenced by the footwear sil

New Styles, Fabrics
In Middy Slip Wear-
Overshadowed in the past
seasons by the tremendous pop
ularity of petticoats, slips now
come into their own with a new
importance ... a new styling
fabric manipulation.
Here as in other phases of
fashion, the elongated torso is
newsworthy. Designed ,to play
up the middy or soft fullness,
slips stress the smooth line to
just below the hips, and then
flare from this point to the hem.
Lightly trimmed with lace or
net, long torso slips will be fa
vored in nylon tricot or the ray
on and nylon blended tricots
Particularly noteworthy this
season are lace slips either
made completely of lace or with
midriff insets of lace, or lace
overlays. These are the slips that
are deisgned "to show"! Other
novelties are tucked bodice front
slips . . . printed, woven nylon
. . . shirred bustline effects . .' .
and tiered skirts descending
from elongated-torso, camisole
type tops.
PANELS OVER PANTS
A new trick in sportswear is
the panel over pants theme.
These look like skirts but are
slit all the way up the sides to
reveal skirt-length trousers be
neath. Destined to be a campus
favorite, these will surely get
wide response in the at-home
fashion collections.
DESIGNER JO COLLINS plays
up the separate story for Fall
in fine ribbed corduroy in this
stunning vest and skirt, perfect
change-abouts for campus or

THE IMPORTANT JUMPER in
this Fall's fashion picture is in

Black Suede Pumps
To Take 1st Place
In Fall Fashions
Pumps, the people's choice for
Fall '52. '
Pumps with detail, with con
trasting color trims.. Pumps with
embroidered vamps and cutouts,
with draping and tucking, with
contrasting fabric and leather
trims.
Pumps with low heels, mid
way heels, high heels, with open
or closed toes, with open or clos
ed backs. Each new style an ex
citing fashion story to correlate
with the complete costume this
Fall.
With the trend to the "little
black dress," this Fall, the black
suede pump, according to the
National Shoe Institute, takes
first place in the color parade.
Rich Details
The pump also assumes fash
ion importance because of the
rich deep textured coats and
suits in the many cross-dyed
wools with color on a black base.
Suede pumps are handsomely
decorated with jet and rhine
stone beading, touches of pat
ent, faille, valvet, satin and calf
trims, fabric braids and appli
ques, mesh inlays, buttons and
bows.
Black shoes are also news
when combined with bright col
ors such as red or black with
green. The autumn harvest tol
ors, from the palest beige to
deep coppery tones, go with the
new Fall costumes and these
sombre shades are also smartly
combined with black.
The warm vibrant shade of
Town Brown will step into Fall
along with important hues, deep
Ruby Red and bright lively ac
cents of green. Grey is a growing
color., especially when combined
with black. Grey flannel goes
well with calf and patent trims,
and 'beige flannel and tweedy
textures are now gaining in
prominence.
New Lines
The shoe silhouette is a chang
ing picture. Scalloped lines
frame the foot, sling heels have
the new higher halter style sling.
Toe openings are varied in size
and sometimes openings appear
unexpectedly at the little toe or
toward the side of the foot. Open
shank pumps, these with closed
toes and backs but open at the
sides create a lighter look.
Comfort goes with fashion as
well as bacon with eggs these
days. Newest innovations in
clude the soft shoe tailored to fit
and feel more like an old glove
than a brand new shoe.
Keeping pace on popularity
with .pumps for Fall, are open
banded shoes in a variety of
strap styles as well as elasticiz
ed bands, slings and pull-over
type shoes which keep the foot
comfortably and conveniently in
just the right place.

Portland (U.R) Portland
Tuesday entered its 51st con
secutive day without measurable
rainfall, the longest dry period
since 1931 when the city had no
appreciable rain for 56 straight
days.
The forecast called for partly
cloudy weather . Tuesday morn
ing, partly sunny in the after
noon with more clouds Tuesday
